Found oil pressure droping so checked oil level seemed high on dip stick. and a bit thin. changed oil and fillter, but after change the level was high on dip stick even though used manual amounts. engine runs fine bit smokey on tick over but to be expected from an old perkins 4108. after running for about 2 hrs under load . stopped and checked oil as pressure started to drop again. Oil was again very thin and level had risen. From advice of freind replaced lift pump as they can leak into crankcase if diaphram leaking. New oil filed as per manual. run 2 Hours , oil pressure drop, thin oil, where is the diesel coming from now, HELP.

Oh dear. Almost certainly a very big problem.

Seek expert help.

Don't run engine...

(Nigel Calder's "Marine Diesel Engines" is very useful. Please don't buy it from amazon - they stink)

Might not be a big problem....

Most likely cause is a perforated diaphram in the fuel lift pump.

Failing that, next most likely is diesel inj pump seals. Getting into a few quids worth of work if that was the case.

Try replacing fuel lift pump first. See if it continues

sound,s like the main seal of your injection pump is shot.
avoid running your engine as bearings dont like diesel
lubrication. costly but essential repair to put right.

I had the same problem with one of my 4108s, had a new seal put in the injection pump £ 35 squids,,,,took the pump off my self ,
