Hi, my perkins perama has started to hunt, but only occasionally.I have searched the web for an answer, but can't seem to find much info apart from air in system and governor springs. It did it last week on start up, but once warm the surging disappeared. I changed all filters last night and all day she has run fine, but when I went to shut down earlier the engine was slightly surging, only about 100 revs but enought to notice.
Any ideas anyone?.

two thoughts:

1) had a diesel car that did that years ago. multiple trips to garage couldn't find a fault. Finally just called out RAC. He said common fault with that particular volvo - hairline crack in fuel filter housing so fine it was drawing air in but not letting fuel out. had tried everything else so replaced housing and he was right, it fixed the problem.

2) when I was a kid my dads boat had a petter mini six engine in it. that would hunt under certain conditions. again after wasting loads of time checking fuel system we found a fractured valve spring that was only partially working. new valve spring fitted and hey presto problem fixed.

neither might be your problem but for what its worth....!!! a peep under the rocker cover should be easy so could a quick bypass of your filter housing?

good luck :)

Hunting - is it ticking over and occasionally speeding up (in which case probably air getting in) or slowing down and recovering, in which case nassties in the fuel pick-up.

Its slowing down by about 100 revs about every ten seconds, but only out of gear. Thanks for the reply.

Hang on, i'm not sure if its up or down, I can't remember.
