Anyone got any thoughts on fuel additives. I'm running a pair of AQAD41's, they are in great shape and I'm not convinced adding anything to the fuel will make a difference, but I'm keen to hear any views for or against.

Depends what you want them to do. If you have the bug, products like Soltron will get rid of it. It will also reduce smoke.

I was once very surprised how much better a sluggish Hylux pickup performed, after we gave it a dose.

However, I do not believe it will improve an engine that has not got some form of fuel problem.

No Conection with Soltron.

This debate goes on and on. Let's put it this way, they don't do any harm, but why not try different makes yourself? I've used Soltron in the past, but don't use anything now. Did it make a difference? Yes, put the cost per litre up!

Buy your fuel from a place that has a high turn over and you will be fine.

No, I dont buy any now, less I get a problem, but thats because Soltron is mostly added at source, or at marinas PYH for one.

Like I said, if it's broke, it may mend it. But if it's not, it cant.

Since when? Red is red - marinas don't add anything. Well at least not down here they don't!

Get the bug and know it!

Had the bug umpteen times, but not recently. Solltron is mainly supplied in bulk. To refineries and shipping lines. It's mostly there but you dont know.

Thort we'd got bug the other day, but drained the filters into a glass. It was like fine wine, not a hint of cloudiness.

That looks nasty stuff !

Were you running close to empty / half or full ?

Marinas and road side filling stations do add chemicals every now and then, if they have a run on fuel sales their tanks get empty they are the same as ours and water is at the bottom of their tanks.
After a few calls from motorists complaining they add water dispersant .

This boat was left with full tanks on the hard for about 18 months. It was only while on delivery from Hamble to Holland that the problem reared it's head.

Most boats probably have it, but they don't go very far and and the filters don't get blocked quick enough, also this sea state was such that it just stirred everything up.

We had to leave the boat and the new owner had to pay for the fuel to be polished and then it went on its way. But it was the worst case of bug I'd seen.

Fuel addatives

Thanks for all the input.

My own thoughts seem to have been validated.

My engines are good, they don't smoke and I use the boat regularly so I recon I'll do nothing right now.

Thanks

I have had problems with previous boats and this one when i got it.

Problems are epensive and fuel pumps and injectors very expensive to repair.

Now I always preventative dose with a biocide, Grotamar 71 to be precise and no problem. Regular dosing cost is minimal.
