Need some work doing on my trusty Ford 2401E 58hp (oil seals, timing belt etc) and I'm looking for a reasonably priced, competent, reliable engineer to carry out the work on my boat.

I've had 2 names recommended to me so far - Bill Harvey and a chap called Lindsay (?) - does anyone have any opinions on these gentlemen or have recommendations for others. (PM me if you want to keep your opinions private)

My yacht is in the water at SYH Levington so will also be contacting French Marine there for a quote but I have a feeling they will be expensive, especially with the VAT element added on.

TIA

Nigel

They are - asked them for a quote once. Thought they gave me a phone number.

Sorry - can't be more helpful.
Good mecanics are hard to find - and once you've got one, stick with him.
In 8 years I've come across only two good ones - one in Ostend and one in Portsmouth.

STRONGLY recomend Dennis Beeston in Brightlingsea, DB Marine Engineering 01206 304391. Very reliable and realistic in pricing. Only real downside with Dennis is that he does tend to get quite heavily booked up...yet again that is I guess the mark of a GOOD marine engineer!!

I think sailorman recommended a freelance engineer, earlier this year, who looked at an engine in Westerly Discus that a mate of mine was buying.

Foxes turned their nose up at the mention of the blokes name and said he was "a man in a van"! That was a major plus point in our view!

My mate said he did an excellant job on inspecting the engine and the engineer insisted that they put the boat in the water and went down the river to test the engine running.

There was however no paperwork involved at all (didn't want/need written reports) which helped to keep the cost down,

Perhaps sailorman will come along shortly, if not PM him.

I might have been wrong when I said sailorman recommended this engineer, as I have looked back on old posts and cannot see where I asked about an engineer.

However the bloke who did a good job for my mate was Lindsay Rufford 07768 772359

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Lindsay (Rufford) was one of the recommendations given to me by a berthholder at SYC - I've heard he's thorough & your story bears this out. I'll contact him and Pete Norris and probably Bill Harvey - in for a penny, in for a pound.

Thanks all
