With winter coming I am looking for a diesel engine course.
Being from Germany where these course are normally not offered, I am thinking of flying (thanks to Ryanair) to Stansted for a weekend with some friends from the club (an alternatice would be Glasgow as there are also cheap flights available). Should be fun to make a trip with some learning and a pint in the pub to get rid of the diesel fumes....

Can anyone recommend a Diesel Engine Course (1 or 2 day) in that area, willing to travel by train, but not longish, as the girls have indicated they would prefer shopping in London to getting filthy in the workshop.
We are all charter skippers and are looking for a very practical hands-on course with a live engine - filters, bleeding, impeller, jump-starting etc.

Any info welcome..., thanks in advance!

Is Southampton airport any good? We are running a one day diesel engine course on 4th November. That well known forumite Col is the instructor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

He has built a specially adapted engine for the purpose. He can "dial" in all sorts of faults.

Thanks so far, that all sounds good! Unfortunately Southampton airport is not serviced from my area... however, hiring a car might be an option.
A search with google turned up britanniasailing on the eastcoast and Jason Morgans "Splashout" sea school... anyone heard of one of those?

Have a look at Maritime Connection at Troon Yacht Haven, which is about five kilometers away from Prestwick Airport (direct flights from Frankfurt Hahn).
They do occasional diesel engine courses.
I have no connection with the organisation nor have I ever used them, but they have a good reputation.

Dash... there goes my commission!

The Glaciere is a floating rya school in Liverpool's Albert dock. There is cheap accomodation nearby (Formula 1 isis etc) good shopping, great night life and more importantly Ryan air fly to liverpool. Have a look at their website or phone for a chat. No connection but have heard good things about the school Glaciere

Thats torn it - as I'd normally recommend Tony Brooks - but if Col is now doing courses as well....

I'd definitely go with Col for powerboats and either Col or Tony for saily boats /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I did mine with Peter at the East Anglian Sea School ouotside Ipswich (easy from Stansted). Peter used to be a mechanic before he took over the sea school from his dad so he is really good with engines. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Why not join the Cruising Association at Limehouse.www.cruising.org.uk tel 0044 (0)20 7537 2828.They run all the RYA courses except for sea survival at their headquarters in Docklands.Very easy to get to from Stansted or London City.A short journey to London Centre by rail services. Also they have some "Cabins " in their HQ available at very reasonable cost.(Ithink £25. per night?).

Thanks for the vote of confidence chaps
The demo engine is a sailyboat jobby, a Volvo 2003 to be precise.
I thought it would be easier to move around than a big powerboat engine.
You can experiance ........

as that's how I prefer to do things. You will also get to use some tools that you may not have used before- Injector pullers, testers, impeller remover etc:
If anyone else wants to do this course, speak to Solitare and he can make arrangements.
