Diesel engine bay insulation

The reason I suggest soft foam insulation is simple :

Sound if reflected or deflected can develop interference patterns - think of those waves hitting sea-wall ... the reflected wave can increase the height of the wave as it combines with the wave coming in .. Sound does the same ...
This is possible with hard egg-box style.
Soft foam style though will absorb the sound - the deeper the foam - the more the sound vibrations are absorbed.

Another area - is the exhaust ... many boats have no or simple muffler - relying on the cooling water to reduce the sound. Choose the wrong size of material for the exhaust pipe and you can have that work in engine compartment nulled.

The soft foam insulation shown in my photo earlier .... open that engine bay and that engine is loud !! Even the intake noise is loud. Drop that cover back so the box is complete with soft foam and the difference is immediate. Without - normal conversation is difficult .. cover in place .. normal conversation is resumed.
