Diesel bug

Finally (I hope) got to the bottom of bad starting and rough running of my VP2002, culminating in today, draining tank, removing inspection hatch, and discovering all manner of goo in the bottom.Also found the fine gauze in lift pump was clogged with said goo. I'v cleaned tank till it sparkles...well,you know what I mean, and my intention now is to put in fresh fuel, bleed through to seperator till happy its flushed out any lingering bug, then flush through rest of system till clean (scrapping the flushed fuel). Question is, would you put a dose of cleaner in the main filter before screwing it on so as to give the injectors a clean. I had them tipped and serviced a fortnight ago and the engine ran like a dream but I think they have become gummed up after running for a few hours.Any suggestion very gratefully accepted. p.s. reckon I will scrap the removed diesel (50ltrs) or is there a safe method of filtering/re-using
 
For £30 to £50 (red or white) is it worth the risk of reintroducing bug. Wait a bit and refueller will give the definitive answer. I would chuck it.
 
Got fuel contamination probs on boat, pumped out and filtered 600 lts into cans, sent injector pump for rebuild, refilled 650lts . put old fuel in car to get rid of it, result : killed car- dirty fuel, bite the bullet, dump crap fuel, clean tank, filters etc, move on its cheaper as i have learnt at my expence
 
Righto all, thanks for advice. Do the local waste depots take dirty fuel ?
 
mine doesnt. the oiks at our dumpit reckoned diesel wasnt oil and so couldnt be pout in the dirty oil tank. no amount of explaining would persuade them that diesel was gas oil or fuel oil.

so it went back home, got filtered through the wife's tights, treated with Grotamar and then back into the tank without problems. the leftover dirt got mixed with wood shavings and made into little parcels with newspaper - brilliant firelighters for the wood burner.

so it was thanks to the dumpit guys. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Ok so you had goo in your tank. With motion of boat you probably had it through system to pumps / filters.

If your tank is now sparkling as you put it - then yes - cleaner in the filter could be a good idea. Plus a dose in the tank.

I do not advocate continued use of bug killer in fuel - but controlled dosing - the levels advised are nice for sellers of the product and when you think you have a problem. Once clean - you can reduce it significantly and only use sparingly on intermittent fill-ups.

Right onto the old fuel. Why waste it ? Filtering is not enough though and the guy who filtered and then put it in his car - sorry but not surprised your car didn't like it.

What I would do is put the fuel in a large container - clear if possible ... throw in a good dose of bug killer. Let it stand for a week or so. You will find the bottom will be gungy, but top will clear. Now syphon of to smaller containers and leave to stand for a few days. By now it should be ok to use. It should still have some killer in it ... left from initial treatment.

There is a way to really filter ( commercials call it polishing ) where you pass it through fine filters repeatedly until fuel is clear. A simple DIY system is a water filter with 5 micron filter in it ... these are the large 20cm long jobs with a blue top and screw on clear filter jar ... You connect up standard plumbing kit and a small pump that can push fluid through the filter. A good drill pump can do it. So you basically circulate the fuel through this with clear pipe in the return line - so you can monitor colour of the fuel. Colour is the best indicator you have without labs as I have. Have a small amount of fresh fuel from your normal retail outlet to compare the fuel with.
Keep circulating till you are happy. This is of course after treatment.

back to matey who fouled up his car - you must have had some really bad fuel to do that. I have truck, van and cars that we throw all sorts of gash diesel into and we never have a problem. I'm talking mixes that have 'black heating oil' added to sometimes ... chuffs a bit of soot sometimes - but runs.

If I was still boating in UK - I would offer to take your old fuel and 'dispose' of it for you !!
