Reading recent threads in this forum I have come to the conclusion that Soltron is the thing to add to my Diesel. In the recent past, I have been using a biocide.

The trouble is that I, or rather my assistant, cannot find any Soltron nearby (Bodmin). The following alternatives are offered:
<ul type="square"> [*]Granville [*]Some Wynns product [*]Startbrite Bio Diesel [*]Fuel Set [/list]

Are any of the knowledgeable forumites able to comment on the efficacy of any of the above or, alternatively, suggest a supplier of Soltron in the Bodmin/Lostwithiel/Fowey area.

Alan.

Stockists of Soltron here although I would go for Fuel Set myself - both do basically the same thing and Fuel Set seems easier to get (not to mention being a bit cheaper)

I dont think SOLTRON is hard to get hold of - and i think its *totally* worth getting it, it certainly removed all the crap from tanks.

In fact there might be a link not a million miles from here that might point to a usefull location....

basically the same thing !!! No one is made to remove water that is its primary function the other is an enzyme made to break down contaminated fuel into resuable fuel.

Thanks

I use fuel set at the moment, Whilst waitin' for some soltron to arrive, although Martin has now bypassed me and taken my soltron with him to sardinia!!! Dom!!! Help!!

Thanks for all your quick replies, and for indulging my lack of more-thorough research last night. I had expected it to be easier to pick up - it is not actually hard but noone local, it would seem (I have a narrow definition of local).

Of course - new products shortly to appear ....

Contrary to popular belief - Soltron is actually not the only product available.
Second it is under test new products to be introduced to the market in near future to cover all needs on Fuel Treament - with full details and impementation once finalised.

The Marine Fuel Market has long been left 'in the dark' and led by the few entrepreneurs who have taken effort to 'get their hands' dirty. Well the world of Marine Fuel is about to be expanded.

There are many reasons why expertise gathered over many years in my work and that of my Laboratories will now be 'released' on the market. The main one being rationalisation of products, increase of Yacht Owners awareness of alternatives and improvers commercially and retail. Effective and sustained improvement for the Yacht Owner without over-costly, over-treatment etc.

Components are being blended and tested at this time and information will be released via Commercial channels later. I will not use YBW or other non-commercial channels to trade. So anyone interested will have to contact me other ways ....

Re: Of course - new products shortly to appear ....

Hi
I have heard about a product called ALGAE X which is fitted in fuel line and forgotten about-said to stop need for dosing and be more cost effective. Anyone know what it is - how it works and anything else about it please - Thanks

In-line fttings ...

It may work - but am skeptical of in-line fittings that say indefinite .....

You can go in shops and buy a Fuel Miser .... small plastic closed funnel with fnacy looking yellow filter inside - says it reduces fuel consumption by xx% etc. It may do it for a while - based on reducing the pressure of the delivery pump ... but the rest of the claims ????? Maybe Algae X from same peopel ?? I don't know !!

Re: Of course - new products shortly to appear ....

They (Algae X) are magnetic fuel conditioners of which a number are peddled around the world (including a local one here in NZ). There was a lengthy thread on these some time ago. In that it was claimed that they were widely used in USA and Australia (for commercial marine and land transport) and also by NZ and Oz cruising boats - at which stage I woke up.

It may be so for some pleasure vessels, but I have never known any pleasure boat in NZ fitted with one and that would put them into the at least comparatively rare case. However, with respect to commercial vessels, at that time I was working on new builds requiring dealing with a very large East Coast USA diesel engine distributer and also one in Australia. Both these dealt with both marine and land transport, and the Australian one also in industrial (eg in mining).

I asked them what they thought of such magnetic fuel conditioners and after them checking to make sure I had not gone bonkers (checking the temperature of my forehead, for dilated pupils, that sort of thing) and their rolling on the floor in mirth, said that they had never ever seen one installed and regarded them as black magic for suckers. When I said it had been claimed that they are widely used in their country they made it very clear that was not so with their engines (and as I say, they had never seen one in use on others either).

Magnetic conditioners sound a load of rubbish to me, targeted at the fringe. Some will disagree but they are, of course, free to fit whatever they like. I recite secret charms to my fuel, seems to work so I'll stick with that myself /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Would you like the personal opinion on magnetic fuel conditioners, or the short scientific summary of what I've posted previously

Personal opinion
They are bolloxs

Short scientific summary
They are bolloxs

From the Fuel Set web site Q&A here
[ QUOTE ]
Q: What happens to the Diesel Bug if I use Fuel Set?
A: The Diesel Bug (Cladisporium Resinae) has its environment destroyed by the removal of water. In light infestations the bug will be dissolved by Fuel Set. In heavy infestations the bug not dissolved will be transported to the fuel filters. It will be necessary to monitor filters in the early stages of treatment where heavy infestations of bug are present.

[/ QUOTE ]

As I said both do basically the same thing albeit by different technology.

There have benn many threads on the forums example over the past year on the subject of Soltron which anyone considering using a fuel additive would be well advised to read carefully before deciding on which one(s) to use.

Personally I am an advocate of sumps and drain cocks on diesel tanks then only a biocide is needed occasionally as the water and crud can be drained out or in worst case scenario the tank can be flushed in-situ. (never had to flush a tank yet)

As with many things prevention is better then cure so by preventing a build up of bugs / dead bugs / crud / water in the tank minimal dosing is required if at all.

And like most items ...

I would check the discount dealers price before bidding !!! Total - that is delivery, VAT etc. etc.

Not unusual for ebay price to exceed price on street !! (I talk of other items - not nec. Soltron .....)
