Did you know?

To get back to the original thread. This comment has been issued by a Springs Director:-

Svenia Franklin From the horses mouth! I'm a Director here at the Springs Hotel & Golf Club. The hotel & the golf club are 2 separate companies. The official line is correct - we are closing the hotel at the end of October and the golf club will continue to operate as normal. It is correct, we are not taking bookings at the hotel after October 2014. In fairness to my staff, they were informed of our closure circa 2 months ago so they would have sufficient time to find other suitable employment - I would highly recommend each and every one of them. The Swan at Streatley people have no involvement whatsoever, the hotel is not on the market. I hope this clarifies our position.

Not wishing to be contentious - especially as we avoid (riverside) pubs as we can never moor anywhere near),
BUT
isn't the problem that the chains by the freehold and then screw the tenants into oblivion by restrictive practices (fixing prices and the like).

The only pubs round here that have any life are independents.....

So, do you think the Mill @ Sonning may also not be involved?l

without a doubt they do.

You may be correct about the Mill at Sonning, but it seems a strange bedfellow to the Swan?
I had heard (very 2nd hand) that it was the Great House at Sonning that they were taking on. A better fit I think? It would certainly be a step up for the GH. We have used it twice in 20 years (1994 and 2011). Both were dire experiences in all respects.

Had lunch at the French Horn recently! Excellent and very good value fixed price Table d'Hote menu. Wine expensive, but not obligatory.

I never eat there since I found out you need take sandwiches to supplement the minuscule helpings they dish up.

Touch out of date, Byron, I think.
We had a very excellent meal and my steak and kidney pudding was VERY substantial in addition to being VERY tasty.

I am pretty sure the Germans have knocked smoking on the head now? our usual haunt in Düsseldorf (old town) would not allow you to smoke this year? it meant we could drink without stinking...

Byron has a very seaman like approach to dining and even takes sandwiches to an "all you can eat buffet" just incase :D
