On a completely different subject, Brian - seeing your location...you've got the Deaflympics going on there now, haven't you? I'm a signer for a young Deaf lad who is playing in the GB football squad (doing very well, too), have you seen any coverage of the event?

Sue

btw...shaddup about the weather, ok?! You're just trying to make us jealous. And succeeding.

Sue, as a complete aside, how did you learn to sign? Many years ago, went along to a local deaf club meeting and asked for help with signing, they could only point me at evening classes that were run irregularly at best, and the timings meant I couldn't go to the very few that were run. I ended up learning the basics from a couple of books. Would still like to learn rather more fluently (I've forgotten all except a very few signs now)

Re: Did U C it ?

Yes.. as it didn't matter who won , there was no prssure, so turned into a slogging match .. (either $5 or 10 grand for each 6 hit) less amount for 4's etc...
Hence the boys on both sides went out to give the crowd a good display.. and succeeded. No I didn't go,( cannot stand the crowds) but it was free-to- air, so watched some of it on TV...

Re: Did U C it ?

Hi Brendan

I know the problems you'll have had, it's pretty common everywhere for people wanting to learn to sign. Part of the problem is, unfortunately, to do with "political correctness". There is a strong view that only Deaf people should teach sign language. What gets forgotten, however, is the support in teaching Deaf people HOW to teach. Consequently you have, as you've found, irratic provision for sign language classes.

I have a friend who is a beautiful signer, a skilled communicator and a wonderful teacher. But she's hearing, and so finds it difficult to set up classes in local colleges. It's a mad world.

Best way I found to learn sign is just keep going to Deaf clubs, meet and make friends with Deaf people.

Good luck

Sue
