Dickinson Newport and low sulphur diesel

I intend to replace a Dickinson Newport solid fuel heater with a gravity drip feed diesel heater, and was considering either a Refleks or a Dickinson Newport. My bias for this last one, as it is similar supported on the bulkhead and more powerful with the present 3" flue pipe.

Not interested in forced air heaters, as I already own a Eberspacher, and I do not want to rely on its electronic.

I read that the Dickinson Newport could be problematic when burning low sulphur diesel, which is the most commonly distributed here, but I could not find recent opinions, so I would appreciate to hear your comments on this matter.

You can get an additional baffle that sits on top of the burner ring for a Dickinson Newport. It increases the burn temperature and fuel vaporisation for low sulphur diesel. Even without it, you would just have to clean the burner bowl out a bit more often to deal with any additional carbon. A wire brush, disposable gloves and a vacuum cleaner all useful for this.
 
Yes I've noticed that petrol station diesel soots up the bowl quicker on my Newport, all other other things being equal. But it isn't an actual problem, day to day.
Robcg, I never knew about that gadget, sounds interresting because mine gets fed a fairly random diet of dodgy old diesel. Wherre do they sell them?

Biscayan you will be fine, the diesel ones have a built-in 12v fan, which helps starting, and burning manky fuel.
 
Biscayan, if you are within reach of Cowes, I have a couple of drip feed heaters taking up space, and I am interested in your solid fuel version. I an not a wheeler--dealer, but I live on board and diversifying my options for heating seems like a Good Idea, as I have high latitude ambitions.

Yes, I know of the additional baffle, I understand that it works.

Reading the heater manual, Dickinson recommends using the fan with this kind of fuel. Is this required all the time, or just when lighting?

Also, I read about certain problems of diesel smelling inside and soot outside.

Any review very welcome.
 
Our Dickinson works fine with low sulphur diesel and the additional baffle. Ran it for 4 months non stop on low last winter cruise and no cleaning required. We do not use a forced draft fan to run the heater but do use on to circulate air round cabin at times.
