When the Shannon was first mooted there were some convincing sounding reasons mentioned here as to why jets are not such a spiffing idea as would first seem, to do with handling and wear on the works due to sandy water I seem to recall ?

Quite right, you get away with shallow water ops at the time but the engineers hate you later when they have to replace the wear rings! Hardly new technology, the Royal Marines have been using them for years in Landing Craft and lets face it ferry operators are pas masters with the technology.
