Dickies deserted

Funny thing Searush, in the early Eighties the mussel industry, now huge in the Strait, was not so relevant or developed.
But still the Residents that look across the Bay were against the Plans.
Dozy beggars!
It was the now owners of the sight and Mr P Dickie that wanted to go ahead in those days!
Tiss a natural place for a Marina
As opposed to tother one (still not dead yet I believe) across at Gallows point!

Ho Hum!

There are plans however
Which Will go ahead (some work already started)
For the development of Beaumaris pier
Back to it's origional width, plus some kinda pontoon facility at the Pier.
Also, there are going to be improvements at Menai Pier for more berthing facilities.
30 years ago, I was involved in the renovation of Bangor pier.
The Pier is now operational
It was knackered and dangerous for ages
I tried my best when I had a Business in Rhyl (my home town) to save the Pier there
I failed!
Llandudno pier is vibrant and a treat to visit
Colwyn Bay's is not!
These Victorian works of art are Special.
So at least there is some good news ref Beaumaris and Menai.

..whats the conway one like now.

Well, I'd like to tell you it's well stocked, run by knowledgeable and attentive staff, and holds common maintenance items.

Sadly I can't. :(

In spring last year, I went in to buy a tide table (you know, the little £1 ish books). They didn't have any:

Out of stock ? " No Sir"
Waiting for this year's version ? " No Sir"

"There's no call for them, Sir. Everyone uses computers these days Sir." - I did ask him if he was kidding, and he wasn't

In fairness, there have been some changes recently since it was taken over by Network (they did have tide tables this year), but I'm not optimistic. If I needed anything, it was always worth the drive to 'Harrods'.

I hadn't realised that the relocated chandlery was going to be smaller :(

My understanding is that the whole site and the adjacent bay are destined to be filled in / built up to provide a base for 'luxury waterside developments' with a few mandatory povo-homes tucked in a corner somewhere. Unlikely to happen in a big rush in the current economic climate, I would have thought.

What a world we live in

Andy

I I was also told of longer term plans to put a cill gate in to create a marina :)

Those may be long. long term plans.
Although Hirael (not Penrhyn Dock) was and is the most obvious place for a Marina.
Which will not affect the Mussel Industry
In short neither would the developement still being thrashed across the way.
It is nothing to do with Mussel boats at Hirael
It will happen one day
But I doubt it in my lifetime
Which hactually, might not be that long the way this F.O.C bottle of White an Mackay is going down:D:D

went in Dickies last week, really strange the how guy in the shop knows hlb's from Conwy, we've only been in there a few times. They had a Littleship type boat for sale for £85k, nice looking boat.

I used to be based in Conwy. I went to Dickies a few times. Never once did I get any service, advice, suggestions of alternatives etc etc. And no, I wasn't bloody minded with them. And then the prices were way over the top too.

They forced me to find what I wanted on the internet. You could never call the internet convenient but it is a great deal better than the Dickies that I knew.

I wish you all well with whatever develops as an alternative.

Mike

It's plastic. I looked at it on Sunday.

Was looking for fenders, we seem to have mislaid a few. Holyhead. A strange ribbed design and odd sizes, 37 quid. Conwy 25 quid and normal sort of size, free piece of string as well, however far to short. Never really liked the service in Conwy though, the girl just seems to ignore you, knows nothing about her job and has even less interest, tends to disapear just as you arrive at the till.

Went to Dickies after buying fenders in Conwy, expecting a tenner a piece, however they had none so bought a piece of string.

Always found the service at Dickies good, even when I've gone in with an old bog valve.

Yes some staff were a bit 'above' themselves
I bought two boats from Dickies in the past
I literally had to 'buy them', like wrench the vessels from them
No sales help at all.
Obviously mobos (like who wants a saily boat;):D) , they had no idea about what they were selling
I dunno about saily stuff, maybe the Sales 'persons' involved in that discipline knew what was what.
Certainly no idea about the mobos on offer.

Spent about 6 over winter periods with boat in Dickies yard and in that time I formed the view that they did not seem to feel a "duty of care" to look after boats on brokerage or in storage in their yard. A number of times boats had foresails blowing loose and the yard staff (who are brilliant and helpful in every other way) would just ignore the flapping and rapidly getting trashed sails, boats were sometimes left open to the elements after viewings and even after being told that boats were open the sales staff did not bother to secure them for a number of days. There is no way I would leave a boat for sale in their "care".
The security was also virtually non-existant at the old yard having a public right of way through and only one security guard paying regular timed visits (?), hopefully the new site will be better managed.
I have always found the shop staff extremely helpful whether I wanted an unusual nut or bolt, something expensive or just a bit of advice.

Well, your tenancy over that period qualifies your comments
I too found some staff to be very helpfull if the search for that 'grib thribbler' was on.
However if 'some staff' were not on duty, I would just not bother to ask tothers.
Still, that is the prob in lots of retail places not just in the Marine world!
Still, the place will be missed, despite all the previous Posts, inc mine!!
