Quite a few unhappy people in Hythe and Marchwood. Unbelievable amounts of dredging required! Perhaps they should have put the aircraft carriers on the mud there.
 
Good news for all you people who have always been envious of the people living in down town Manhattan.

Your descendants are going to end up living in just such a similar cesspit.
 
Seems good to me. Hopefully an infrastructure project will be allowed to go ahead and the Nimbies won't screw the world.
 
So, taken with Heathrow and the nuclear power station, it looks like the Government's "plan" to mitigate the economic impacts of EU single market exit is to attempt a mini "Marshall Plan" and sink lots of money into mega infrastructure projects. Kind of makes temporary economic sense, funded by private funds, except where does the extra income come from to fund these things - as presumably a bigger port is to handle more imports
 
Are there good onward transport links to move the extra freight inland to the markets? I have very little experience travelling in that part of the world but it did not look like big motorways right to the seafront.

There's a rail spur to Marchwood, and that rendering above looks to include sidings in the new port area. The road up towards Totton is ok as far as I remember, but if it did need upgrading there aren't very many miles to do before you meet up with the M271 which is the logical route out from the existing docks.

Google maps shows a boat hard standing area just to the north of Hythe Marina Village, which appears to have disappeared beneath water in the OP's image.

For traffic heading toward London or generally east, it may just be OK with existing roads. Going north theres 40 odd miles of dual carriageway A34 to the M40 - intersected about halfway by the M4. I used to travel that frequently, up to 12 years ago, in an earlier life - it suffers hugely from the truck overtaking syndrome which can back traffic up for miles. I'd suggest that road would need an upgrade.
 
Makes a lot of sense to me. The Southampton side gets far too crowded and they still use the rail line in for cars, there is a lot that comes in by road. Also if the shifted some of the frieght to Marchwood there would be more space for cruise liners, which do have the advantage of bringing tourist money into the city.

I seem to recall that part of the justification for the Totton bypass, direct to the M27 was to allow for more freight to be carried to the then, on the cards, Marchwood development. ABP got blocked but the road was still built. It wouldn't take that much to duel it if and when necessary.

The only real issue that I see is air pollution. I have heard it suggested that the ships version of marina shore power would cut it down quite a lot.
 
The berths will be built somewhere. Last time Southampton got knocked back new berths were built at Felixstowe and Thames Gateway.

I used to work in Hythe, commuting in from the North. There are stretches of dual carriageway up to the M27 (and on to the M3), but the whole bit will need connecting up and flyovers to replace some roundabouts if it is to flow. All possible without disturbing too many people IMHO. Heading North to the Midlands is an M27 - M3 - A34 odyssey. The A34 is largely dual carriageway but, as said earlier, much choked with heavy traffic. If there is a doable project to reduce bottlenecks it would be to upgrade all the sections that cross low population farmland. Is it all part of Salisbury Plain?
This is a port project that MUST be done.
 
Why do they need to upgrade the roads for lorries. Put everything that comes of the ships onto the rail network. Problem solved.
