This is my first posting on the PBO site so forgive me if I'm requesting something which has been dealt with a thousand times before. I'm planning to install a holding tank for the heads on my 33' boat and would like an idealised schematic of the appropriate layout - eg how far from the heads should the tank be, how to arrange the plumbing for emptying the tank both at sea and via a pump station at a marina. I recall there was an article about this in PBO several years ago.
Thanks for any help.

There are lots of ways to do it as you'll see thanks to the preceding posts.

I strongly recommend the use of a Y valve so you can have direct discharge when at sea.

Our boat was designed so that the discharge always went into the tank, then "straight through" if you opened the bottom valve. However we found it easily clogged up and had to redesign so that the discharge either goes straight to the through-hull or to the tank (needs 2 Y valves to do this and make sure they are decent quality if you go that route).
