I know Cornwall has been beaten up, but I heard reports of Torquay and therefore presumably Brixham Marina's getting a hammering today from the weather?? I've been told of boats being damaged and all  But has this all been exagerated as is often the case? Anyone been down there to see?

It was blowing straight onto Maidencombe this afternoon with big seas and 50mph wind recorded at Torquay Coastwatch. I shall nip down to the marina tomorrow to check out my boat, should be OK as I think the sea was more onto the seafront than the marina.

I'm in Brixham marina . Very bouncy and surging . Dont think there has been much damage ,have just spoken to marina staff who have been out all day checking for damage. Must admit the larger MoBos are careering all over the place tho' . If any one wants me to check their boat in the marina drop me a PM .

Hi Ripster,

I'd concur with NoviceRod.

I went for a walk along the front yesterday evening when winds were probably at their worst, but sea state wasn't that bad. There was an inshore swell of perhaps 2' - 2'6" max and coming over the sea-wall, so probably 4-5' out in the Bay. Torquay Harbour was calm however (walked right out along the piers) and given the wind seemed to be SE or ESE, Brixham should be OK. I've not been down tonight, but although seafront was closed, that was more due to high-tide and torrential rain than winds I think. There was a lot of standing water on the roads when I left work at 5:30 (near sea-front) but pretty calm compared with yesterday evening. I wouldn't have wanted to be out in our 14', but berths in Marinas should have been ok!

Been looking at the Froward Point weather site and webcam, worst time was about 15-30 today, winds gusting in excess of 50kts and a steady 40 odd SSE until about half an hour later when it turned W about 10kts.
The winds until then have been strong all day from SE direction, not good for anywhere in Lyme Bay and most places further West. A proper gale.

Ah, that show's the benefits of being indoors then ! I looked out a few times during the day but it didn't seem that wild. Last night the cafe tables around the inner harbour were blowing around, but the water in both inner and outer harbours were fairly calm. Although Brixham is very sheltered from the SE wind, the wide entrance makes the swell more of an issue. I'd still think the boats will be fine - having lived here 43 odd years, I've seen some massive seas by comparison!

Not sure what your point is. :o The sea often comes over the wall in an easterly and yes, it looks quite spectacular, but it gets much worse than that and with a much bigger swell! The very nature of the Bay's geography and things like the promenade steps ensure the water goes vertically when it hits the shore. I've witnessed plumes of water like that coming over Haldon Pier at 100'+ and at Torre Abbey when it clears both carriageways - only then would I refer to it as 'severe'... The press love a good story as we know and half-an-inch of snow is testament to that. :D

The sea walls at Dawlish and Teignmouth would have likely offered even better picture opportunities...

The weather has been **** all day, high winds, currents strong as feck out there too, i heard of some damage to boats but not sure, better check mine haha! its been pissing down all day too :( absoultly **** weather here at the minute

Just been down to Torquay Marina. Complete contrast to yesterday, sun, no wind, sea flat.

Panacea was fine, and it would have been great for a spin across the bay, but she is sick, waiting >3 weeks for a part from Yanmar (under warranty) to fix an oil leak:mad:.

The staff said there was a bit of a swell in the marina yesterday, and they had to put extra lines on a couple of boats.

Thanks for all the local feedback - appreciated.

Had a mate check over mine and all is OK thankfully. He said that one or two of the small boats managed to jam themselves under pontoon edges and one or two of bigger Mobos had fenders burst, so a few scrapes and scratches by the sounds of it - this all according to reports via the Marina staff to my mate - so not seen any of this myself.
