Anyone have any experience of Deville diesel stoves? Looking at fitting one of their Atrium range. pretty cheap, kick out lots of heat, Cooktop on top and can be retrofitted with a boiler to heat up the calorifier and a couple of rads.

Money is currently burning a hole in my pocket and needs to be spent before SWMBO appropriates it for non essential (i.e. non boat related) purposes.

Seen a few mentions of them used in ditch crawlers, but not in "proper" boats *grin*.

Not strictly a marine product so is not vastly overpriced.

Its not something I'd use underway. I have a webasto blower that can take the chill off, and might also fit a small diesel water (hydronic) heater for summer use for hot water and heated towel rails in heads.

The other option is one of those boatman stoves.

I like the look of the boatman, crackling log fire, glowing coals etc... the Deville is a boring brown box-like thing, with a glass window so you can see the flame.

but the deville will kick out more heat (5.8kw against 4 kw), no mess, no problems with fuel storage, coal dust, bits of wood lying around and wife generally in a strop regarding the ash and soot that I will probably get everywhere.

Can be left on all day and night.. no worries about stoking the thing etc.

I have also looked at those Bengco things, great idea, but at £400 seems over priced. doesn't chuck out as much heat and has no boiler option either.

So what should I use on my currently cold and damp 44 foot motorsailer?

regards,

Nick

Fit a bigger thermostat controlled webasto. Lots of hot dry air to keep your boat nice and dry and comfy!

From a heating designers point of view the blown air heaters usually are the wrong solution on a boat unless you plug into shore power, have a very well insulated boat and a large bank balance.
Us humans like to feel a radiant heat source. It is part of the process of feeling comfortable. I have 2 blown air heaters in a fairly poorly insulated boat so speak from experience.
I have recently fitted a Dickinson diesel heater that gives 5 kw of dry heat, uses no power and has no smell. It cost me £600 imported straight from Canada including all the bits to fit it and it has transformed the comfort on my boat.
It is all s/s and very well made. If you want comfort try one of these

the deville is similar I think, though enammelled rather than SS, cost is £380 inc flue. really good value, if ugly as sin.

I had a deville heater on an inland waterways boat once, kicked out load of heat, but only worked safely when the boat was sat extremely steady, had a few nastly blow backs when movement occurred. It would be my opinion not to touch it with a barge pole, unless your boat is always on hard-standing. Try a reflek far better design, although you do have to pay for it!

But you said you had money burning a hole and you were thinking of buying a hydoponic thingy this year, now you say you've no money, strange, or has the SWMBO seen this post?

ahh I have 500 or 600 burning a hole. SWMBO found a fair chunk of my hidden reserves last year and made me spend it on her.

Hydronic thingy will come once I start new job in a month or two and get relocation payment... Unless that gets found out too!

I have just ordered a diesel fire Newport, in brass, with thru deck fitting and H cap for £430 delivered from the US, plus what ever the revenue men might try and sting me for..

Any hints as to ways and means around that little rip off, feel free to share!

The first thing you shouldn't have mentioned was the price! Then you could have got them to put a reciept on the package for 200 squids, because, jolly old customs and excise are going to charge you tax on the cost and postage.

How the DeVille do I work it?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, I am a new boater, just beginning to experience my first winter (or is it still Autumn!?). I have a Deville heater on the boat, and when I moved on with my partner, the previous owner gave us instrucions on how to work the heater. I asked my partner to write it down .I looked over the instructions at the time and asked him if he would be able to understand them when the time came to use them...

You can guess the end of the story, I'm sure. Does anyone have an instruction manual, or can anyone give me some instructions on how to use the bloody thing? I'm freezing!

Many thanks,

Valkyrie x
