I wondered what level of service records people generally keep. I have a Fairline with 2 x D12 800's, bought new in 2007 and whilst I've obviously had the engine service log stamped each year, I haven't kept detailed receipts of service work done as I've largely simply followed the manufacturer's recommended works schedule based upon the relevant engine hours at the time of the service. Nor have I had the Onan generator service log stamped (didn't know there was one until I spotted it in a file last week!). I had always thought that Volvo kept a central log of service work done by their approved engineers but maybe that's optimistic (in the extreme?!).

Perhaps I need to be a little more diligent about record keeping....?

I am amazed how many owners don't bother to insist on the dealer stamping there service books after the first and second service when there motors are in warranty.
Volvo have history backed up but, as I've found dealers can't be bothered to dig out service history to second owners should they need info when buying a boat that's out of warranty.

Now if you buy a new car the books are always stamped as a matter of procedure.

I even have my own rubber stamp.

I'd insist on proper records when buying any boat under 10 years old especially with common rail engines and dph drives.

coming from the world I do I would not buy a boat without a complete service record, I would always expect a pile of service invoices. Certainly I loved the fact my Hardy had 9 service invoices when I bought it and it now has a further 3 and it is 11 years old....

funnily enough I read an advert only today for a boat, one of the lines in the advert read, "last engine service 2009".....it was almost as if that was a selling point. To me it switched me off straight away!!

Helpful to know that Volvo do keep some kind of central backup. At least my 2 x service logs are fully stamped up...now to find those old invoices...or ask the relevant dealer/service co to dig out an old copy invoice! With hindsight, it must be worth keeping as much detail as possible because these kinds of records must be important to some (though seemingly not all) buyers!

I have an excel spreadsheet detailing all the service work done to the engines, generator and outboard, but have not kept the receipts (perhaps I should have??). This spreadsheet includes other big jobs done (new gearbox a few years ago, new shaft, rudder and other expensive bits.) but I don't keep a record of the minor on-condition stuff (this year including new wipers, new flybridge screen, new windlass switch etc etc..) as it should be obvious to a prospective purchaser / surveyor that eveything visible is in good nick.

Somewhat perversely, I DO have every receipt and invoice for work I have done on other peoples boat, mainly for end of year tax purposes. All this is kept permanently, so if I've done work for you and you want a copy, just let me know! :)
