Last week I had a certain ex member of our forces on board during a circumnavigation of Anglesey. Said member is well know hereabouts. Well on leaving on this epic voyage it quickly became apparent that rank/privileged was being used to get on the helm.
This Ex defender of the realm often maligns Little Ships ability to travel quickly but insisted for about 6 hrs that he was quite happy to navigate the treacherous waters around Anglesey, stopping only briefly to replenish his own fuel tank with a Ham sandwich and tea prepared by the once very proud but now dismissed helmsman.
Arriving at Holyhead the forecast was getting much worse and a continuation of this epic voyage was put on hold, even Little Ship wont play out in 7-8s. Within 24 hrs this stalwart of the forces deserted the bridge and made a run for home by train, leaving the newly appointed helmsman alone to face the forthcoming rough weather and drinks ceremonies with the natives. Four days later when the weather had abated somewhat, Little Ship was about to make a run for home when two new comrades applied for the helm position and in true style the newly appointed and old (as in past) helmsman was again demoted to chief cook/engineer.
We were back in Little Ships berth in a tad over 4 hrs, which isn't bad for about 40miles. On arrival the deserter was on the dockside to take lines and apologise for not returning to station........... so
Should he be publicly flogged for dereliction of duties or should I allow him once again to pilot Little Ship through these treacherous waters.
This does raise one more point.......... why is it that when I need help with the antifoul there is nobody around but try getting on the helm of your own boat and...... well need I say more.
