Hello,

I'm looking for a hoist I can fit to the stern of my boat to lift fuel cans aboard from my tender. I'm sure you must be able to get them and I'm sure I've seen them somewhere, but can't find anybody selling them anywhere...

What I really want is something like an L-shaped length of stainless tube with a winch on it, that I can slot into some sort of mount (and then remove when I'm not using it) on the stern of my boat (the red thing in the sketch below). Surely somebody must sell them? I could always make one out of wood, I suppose, but something in stainless steel would be a neater (stronger) solution...

Any help would be much appreciated,

Why not get one made, but plastimo make something like it look in the chandlers catalogues

How heavy are the cans?
If you give the maximum load you will get some good advice.
Plastimo do two. One has a maxload of 35kg (equivalent to a 6hp motor they say) and is clamped to the guardrail the other is more like a davit and is rated up to 80kg but requires deck fittings.
See your local steel bender; its not a big job and I expect its been done before.
PS Nova Lift looks good but expensive.

thanks for the help so far - I thought I'd seen something like what I want in the Plastimo catalogue, but I looked on their site and couldn't find anything...

The cans are 20 litres, so nigh-on 25kg(ish) each. I'll certainly ask around - I hadn't really considered actually getting one made up, I thought drawing up plans etc would be too difficult.

Here is a pic of the bits which I cobbled together to make the derrick. Total cost about 10 Euros

The straight piece fits into a larger diameter tube (not shown) which is fixed to the pushpit with U-brackets,and dismantles easily to fit in the locker. We use it mainly as an outboard lift,as shown ,but could double as a MOB hoist if needed (tested!!). I made it from S/S tubing which I found in a skip,the tackle was off a scrap Bavaria.

I though that if you can put a [I think] 38mm stock on the bottom of your derrick, you'll be able to fit a standard stainless game-rod holder through the deck to act as a fairly tidy base so you can dismount the whole thing without having extra pipes and things to mess up your boat's lines.

I have found another piccie of the hoist. As I said earlier,it quickly dismantles and stores in a locker when not in use. The base is a bit like a game rod holder..screws to a plate on the deck made from bits I scavenged from skips. You might just be able to see that a vertical tube ,the height of the pushpit is secured to te pushpit by u-bolts. The Straight tube in th previous photo goes into this and the bent section fits neatly over this,the join is hidden by the bracket. Hope this helps.
