My depth instrument is intermittently reporting “signal lost or bad connection”. This sometimes happens when in very deep water for extended time (e.g. 75m or more) but is now occurring anywhere.
It’s an ancient instrument (Cetrek) and I don’t know the actual make of transducer.
The wiring is as follows, power (+ and gnd) are supplied to the instrument which then has a four core cable connecting to a small box of electronic tricks, below decks, into which the two cores from the transducer cable are connected. 2 of those cores are once again +veg and gnd.
From what I can see the small box of tricks supplies power to the transducer and converts the returning signal to a format that the instrument can read. The instrument has an NMEA out port to enable depth data to be used elsewhere in the boats systems. (For which I have no need and don’t use)
Can anyone think of an obvious way to test which of the three components might be faulty. Replacing the transducer will require a haul out so I don’t want to do this until I know for certain that the fault is with the transducer itself and not the box of tricks or the instrument.
Needless to say (but I will, because it is the forum!) I have checked and remade all available connections!
TIA
