So it consumes 0.38 Amps at 12V so it consumes 4.56 Watts.

But it has a transmit power of 300W

they must use the same bizarre method of power measurement, as cheap hi fi's and car radios, that proclaim ridiculous power outputs.

It may be 300W for the millisecond or so that each ping is sent, after that its only listening.

My girlfriend works on the reverse principle, a millisecond listening then long duration high power on transmit...

Seems reasonable. My fishfinder claims 1200 watts and 800ft depth, but you can run it from dry cells if you want. Perhaps the consumption isn't that high.
