Hi moved depth sounder from in hull to the transom after advice on this forum. Perfect when stationary. Leaps up to 40 plus meters when outboard running. Assume need to move away from the outboard as getting interference as maybe too close - correct? I assume it must always be at the back of the boat just more at the furthest distance from the engine? So the outer edge of the transom?

You want the transducer sitting in clean water. Any air flow -> bubbles caught in stakes / chines etc that will disturb the water around it once on the move will impede it's signal and give a false reading. Best way to check is to strap it to a broom stick or similar and with the boat moving test by hand for the best position at all speeds.

your boat could be tricky to have a working depth sounder whilst planing due to turbulence and lots of bubbles.
