Hi, hoping to pick someone up from the visitor pontoon by The Queens Head on the Hythe in Maldon. I draw 1.8 m. Should I be OK +- 1hr ht? The HT tide at W Mersea is 5.2 that day...
Any local knowledge gratefully received!

Be alright + or - an hour HW but actually getting in the jetty can be an issue. Have you rung the HM? Often big boats blocking access.

Only been there twice and it was years ago but there was not a lot of water there.....but a lot of mud......so long ago i cant remember what boat or what she drew. Be interesting to see if anyone has up to date knowledge.......never was able to get hold of the harbourmaster.

You could raft up to a barge if it looks dicey.....much more water there.

Any update on the visitor pontoon depths above datum. I can take to the mud but I am concerned about getting in and just as importantly out. I have a meter draft.

deepest approach is right under the bow of which ever barge is moored nearest.......bit of a ridge otherwise to get over. With one metre i'd be cautious, visited a couple of times last year. As I understand it the barges tend to push the silt up into that area with their low water coming and goings

Google Earth photos are almost a waste of time because of the time scales of when they are taken... On street view for example, the street where I live is over 14 years old...

In many places they are more accurate than charts, and give more up to date view of things like pontoon layouts than pilot books. So a very useful source, but as ever not to be relied upon entirely (eg when cloud obscures a bay)

For a future visit. I will try to get a better picture the next time but this one was taken at 2.2m height of tide at Osea island. Tricky to judge but will probably need a 3m HOT to get a zero depth alongside the pontoon.
