Last year I replaced an old spinning disk echo sounder with a NASA Clipper unit. I fitted the new transducer next to the original one (it was epoxied in and I coudn't be bothered to remove it). I have found that both the original and the new tranducer work equally well so I now have a spre in place with the lead coiled up should one fail. I believe the frquency used is about 150KHz.
Having been a sport fisherman now turned yachty, my first mistake when replacing my depth sounder was to put in a yacht type. The Eagle that I had before was absolutely brilliant compared to the one I have now ( nothing wrong in the unit, it just isn't the same as having all the info. below).
The Eagle mounted in my previous boat was epoxied into the hull (on the inside) and gave superb results, but this was a GRP hull. Most of the fishfinder type come with bracked to mount on the transom, and work well. One comment on installation, to mount the transducer on the inside of your ferro. hull with putty or blue tack to try to see if it work(I did this on mine and it workd fine) for a temporary measure to see where the right place is. Push well down to get any air out of the putty etc., as this will hindere the signal.
