Which country provide good dental care?
Obviously we are cruising various countries but I wondered how people have found their dentists and does the E111 cover dental work.
Does price and the quality of work between the various countries differ a lot and is it better than in the UK.
I would hate to go in for a check up only to have wooden teeth fitted and be charged a small fortune.

The dentists on Crete (and I assume throughout Greece) are all private, so the EHIC (old E111) doesn't cover them. That said the dentists we have used (all on Crete) have been excellent with all the latest equipment and training. They're not expensive either, especially if you pay cash. Oh dear, I bet I've opened another can of worms there......

It's the "Oral sterity" measures I presume :D

Had tooth / crown done in Azores - excellent and relatively inexpensive.

Wife had a complicated root canal job done in Trinidad - excellent work & inexpensive by UK standards.

All private but not much dinero really.

I wouldn't worry - there are many highly trained & skilled dentists (& doctors) working in far away places. Try & get a local recommendation.

I might add that it's well worth getting any outstanding work done before you leave the UK!
Then an element of prevention will pay dividends. Oral hygiene can no doubt suffer on board altho it needn't. Fluoride toothpaste nightly works!! Don't use you teeth as tools either. I've lost count of the cusps I've replaced after use as bottle openers.
When you lose a filling, try and clean it out and get some "Cavit" or similar in place.
If you're unlucky enough to develop a "fat face" abscess, you can self medicate with antibiotics and painkillers, but you must have it dealt with at the next convenient stop.
Remember allergies to penicillin do occur. If you get a red rash stop and don't take it again.

Went a dentist here in Cesme, Turkey. She came highly recommended by the expats living here. I had a tooth break and went to see her about it. I was seen within half an hour and had an extraction and an appointment was made for the following week for a deep scrape and clean. I was happy with the treatment. The bill was £55

We had trouble in the Uk. When we left Ramsgate heading towards Harwich. Wife phoned one dentist in Harwich about 15 miles out at sea only to be told that they didn't take new patients. So she decided to phone NHS Direct and spoke to one of the nurses. All the nurse wanted was a POST CODE. My wife explained that we were at sea heading towards Harwich and didn't know any post codes so the nurse says sorry without your post code I am afraid I cannot help. So we gave them the post code of the dentist who could not help and they gave us an NHS dentist who would .. :D

A group of American dentist’s come once a year to St Vincent and provide free dentistry they have to have security guards to hold back the press of people wanting the service. Every 6 months the SDA church provides a visiting dentist for its congregation.
In Venice we found dentistry good but expensive; 200 euros for a straightforward filling. In the Grenadines a German dentist fly’s his private plane between the islands, everyone says he is the best and he is cheap $EC130 (£33) for a complex filing that required two appointments. He’s at the health clinic in Canouan most Thursdays and has a very attractive assistant :-)

We have had occasion to use dentists in Trinidad, Panama and Guatemala. All very acceptable at low cost. The most outstanding treatment was Guatemala ! A difficult root canal, jaw abscess involving a specialist coming out from the city to a local surgery (about 4 hours travel) came to the grand total of 100 euros!!!

If you have things like bridges and caps we have found a superb site that sells the glues that the dental profession use, they are far better than the stuff you find over the counter www.dentala2z.com

:-)

I had excellent dentistry in Mallorca by a Swedish dentist who claimed that he had been the dentist to the Swedish Royal family. Crowns were his speciality:D

Dentists in Spain are private but very competent and costs compare very favourably with the UK. In places along the Med coast there are British and other northern European dentists, too.
You can get an emergency dental kit in the UK (I forget where from, but Google it) which has temorary fillings, oil of cloves, dental mirror etc in case you are at sea for extended periods.

Most sailors have a girl in every port but, me, I used to have a dentist. I got to S of France and suffice it to say thay the work cost slightly more than my first house, Well actually much more but I have not been back for about 5 years so I got some of it back.:D

Whilst the theory is sound, dentists in UK are probably the most expensive and no better than those in Turkey and the rest of the EC.

Used to be woman down the road in the Algarve. (I hesitate to use the word dentist..) who would pull a tooth for 400esc (€2!). extra if you wanted anasthetic. The real ones are very good there.

I took my visit to my dentist this weekend. She looked at my teeth with certain equipment and it was little painful for me because bacteria damaged a lot inside my tooth. She suggested me to do RCT operation .is this safe and how much I have spend on it..

Most dentist surgeries are empty.....just a wooden chair and a stand with a bowel of water(optional) and then there are the range of PLIERS!!!!

As far as I know from experience state dentists take teethout for free all other stuff is private.

NOT The UK thats for sure, Have you smelt the breathes of some...
Plus most of the Dentists are foreign anyway.

Dentists in Turkey

We have tried several dentists near Marmaris, here in Turkey. Generally they have been excellent, and relatively inexpensive. As a previous poster said, get anything finished in the UK. I would have said the same too, but no longer.

You will also find (in Turkey at least), as these professionals have been well trained they also speak excellent English. So no worries, having the wrong tooth removed!

Agree with this, my wife had dental work done in Spain (Almerimar) very good experience and significantly cheaper than home (we don't have a NHS dentist).
