Density of salt water vs fresh water.

With all top hamper removed the boat is 2.58 m high.Upper Medway bridges listed on EA sourced sites are alleged to be max 2.55m,however most are a bit higher than that as we can always see at least 12" of daylight twixt wheelbox roof and bridge.
Cannon Bridge is listed at 2.35m but my tape tells me its 2.6m.Suspect we will still take the boat up to have a look over bank holiday, even if we have to moor the wrong side of bridge.Might go back with tape again tho to double check.
The alternative is to go with Unit 18 round to St Kats, but wherever he goes so do F6 winds and heavy rain. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This involved a plank of wood a spirit level one tape measure and having a temporary loan of some water and a boat I had aquired at some point.

Thats not how you did it, that's what you used /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am , as you will realise, sceptical that you were able to achieve an accuracy to 0.01 metres (1 centimetre). Would you care to declare a margin of error?

You will appreciate my concern. After all, both the boat and the water are easily disturbed.......as indeed might the measurer be ...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bridge higher or water lower - or maybe a bit of both ????

Forget the measurements......go try it but preferably with a downstream flow ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a guillotine lock at snitterby carr that once got stuck, 8 inches was need so two boats pumped in gallons of water so they could clear the gate.

Method

remove head hose from seacock (has to be the head outlet as there is no scoop on it)
Then open the seacock until you sink enough.

once clear and doing about 4-6 mph (10 is better, but could be a problem inland and with water onboard) open the seacock again that will allow the siphon effect to empty the water as quickly as it came in.

Things to remember, as you speed up the water will slop to the stern so move carpets.
the boat will be slower and less stable if you have to take a lot on.

have a good pump ready in case you can not get up to speed to get the siphon to work.

By the way 3 miles past snitterby is a dead end with one Pub at the end /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As we open the throttles, will be filling in the insurance claim for dents in concrete bridge ,will mention your advice in mitigation to council solicitors.............. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Running through on the plane is not rec. as the boat will be higher out of the water than stopped. I often have this problem under Bursledon Bridge where on low pressure 'springs' i'm at the same level as the bridge. If you line the boat up straight and as the bow goes under give it lots of wellie and the boat will squat down at least 18''. Ihave done this many times after watching Sealine opposite my mooring do it with much larger boats. The alternative usually about midday on a Saturday is to wait about 2hs. for the ebb of the double tide. Dave.

That Bridge .Final Verdict with wifes ex Ikea tape measure.

Bridge 2.62 M
Boat 2.55 M
Bridge minus boat = 7 cms clearance. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
