Thinking about next year, if I were to sail from Denmark to Scotland (moray firth area) am I best coming out the Elbe or Skaggerat? Aware wind direction is the major factor especially with the prevailing SW .. would probably be doing this late June, early July. Thoughts?

You might also consider the Limfjord/Thyborøn as exit point.
If choosing to go further north, through the Skagerrak, I wound suggest going over to the Norwegian side and picking somewhere between Mandal and Egersund as departure port.
No experience of crossing myself, but know this side fairly well.

Denmark is a big place. What bits do you plan to visit before you depart for Scotland?

If a pure delivery trip and already in the South, the Kiel Canal and then across might be fastest route.

But lots of lovely places to visit in Denmark and West Sweden meandering North towards Skagen in Denmark, or Fjallbaka and others in Sweden.

We tried to head back directly from Orust (having cruised S Norway extensively the previous year) but ended up stopping in Mandal for fuel.
And as BagaYaga says Limfjord could be an option, So many choices, depends on where want to see beforehand and the weather at the time.

Which way are you going in? Kiel Canal is worth the experience at least once, as is Helgoland.

If your trips are like mine, whichever way you plan to passage, it will be an adverse wind. At least you have more options coming out the Elbe.

We did Orkney to Denmark and back in 2011.
Outward we went up to Shetland then across to Haugesund, around the Norwegian coast to near Kristiansand then across to Skagen.
It was a bad summer and return was delayed to late Sept / Oct. Skagen to Mandal to Eggersund. Waited a couple of weeks for suitable weather which took us in to early October. Eggersund to Peterhead, as probably the second shortest N Sea crossing. (Outer islands off Bergen to Lerwick is only 170 miles). Another wait for weather then home to Orkney.
