See the following links to electronic petitions on the No 10 Downing Street web site. I believe that forumites will be especially interested in the two below, though there are many others. The anti road pricing (spying on innocent road users more big brother behavior worse than ID cards even) seems to be the best supported over 500,000 responses.
But as seafarers I think supporting the RN is especially relevant to us in these days of increasing piracy etc.

Er, so let's get this right - you don't want to pay more taxes, but you do want increased spending on the RN? So waddya want to cut spending on?

And surely any tax that might reduce carbon dioxide emissions is something that lovers of the sea should support - even if you don't buy global warming (hey, why should we beleive the academies of science of most countries?) the acidification of the oceans due to carbonic acide build up is very clear.

So I say - bring on road pricing - and let's dedicate any funds raised to the RN.

But I must declare two vested interests - I'm a navy sprog (both sides - Fleet Air Arm and WRENS) - and an environmental scientist.

1 The Iraq war
2 Blair should keep his promise to cut 100,000 civil service posts
3 Aid to corrupt 3rd world dictators
4 Invalidity Benefit - There cannot be that many invalids
5 A 20% cut in local authority employees with savings from central grant
6 A phased reduction in the payments we are obliged to make to the EU

I think that should free up enough cash to finance an effective navy.

I don't object to paying tax collected in an equitable way based on ability to pay. I do object on principle to intrusive monitoring of my every movement by car with no guarantee of the security of the data. Not to mention the fact that with this (any) governments record on big technology projects the chance of such a system actually collecting enough revenue to pay for itself seem slim. Plus we already pay for the amount of mileage we do in fuel tax, all pay as you drive will do is place a further tax burden on those likely to be least able to afford it ie those with jobs with inflexible hours that require them to travel at peak times in to our towns and cities.

I wonder why this has received virtually no press coverage when at the same time only 40,000 protests about some crap TV programme has hardly been out of the papers for several days?
