Delivery Skipper - real world!

That's my original understanding although I'm trying to clarify it's a correct understanding. Provided the boats owned by a third party I'm legally entitled to deliver her for the owner and charge for my services without a commercial endorsement. The issues with insurance etc are common sense which I'll address. The owner himself/herself isn't taking paying passengers so all should be ok and above board?

Cheers, Brian.
You are correct. You may be entering into a "commercial" transaction with the owner but that meaning of commercial has nothing to with a "commercial" endorsement.

The MCA/RYA commercial endorsement is required when the boat is being used by the owner for profit and therefore would require the correct coding and the correct manning levels and the correct qualifications. Obviously this would apply to a sailing school vessel as the owner is making money. This would also apply if the instructor was using his own vessel for teaching but it would not apply in the case of "own boat" tuition as the owner is not making a profit (apart from, hopefully, in the way of further knowledge). It would be plain daft to expect a boat owner doing his Yachtmaster prep/exam on his own boat to get it coded before the examiner could come aboard.

I have always found the MCA coding department very helpful..... 023808396400

Have a good trip:)

The original question was about the need for an endorsment. The title was about real world delivery.
So I was just wondering about the real world of a delivery skipper.
I put an advert in sailing mag (YM) long ago before endorsments and only ever got 1 reply long after I'd given up and moved on.
A couple of friends have some bad expiriences. with a dodgy boat and an even dodgyier skipper.
There is the whole reliance story. (I did get a quote from them to move my new boat home truck was cheeper) I'm even cheeper.
So my question is what have been the "real world" expiriences of some of you who have done some delivery work. ease of finding work? Boats good or bad, agencies good or bad.
Just curious not planning to go into competition any time soon.

I didn't use the "quote" reply - this is in response to uricanejacks post just above mine.

I'm interested in reading any replies to this for obvious reasons! Do you think it might be worth starting a new thread on availabilty of work, prices charged/paid, good/bad experiences from both side of the contract?

Cheers, Brian.

Thanks Pete R,

In answer to the above, I did many deliveries mainly through friends of friends or contacts and a number of boats were in a terrible state, often the delivery job turned into a weeks work sorting the mechanics/electrics before going anywhere. I also ended up being the eyes on the ground when work was done for owners in foreign yards. Project managing keel , rigging and grp work to see it was done properly. I don't think there were any straight simple get on and go deliveries.

I notice everyone is talking about Ym with comm endorsement but surely for delivery trip an RYA ocean master qual would make the OP more attractive to employ.

i mentioned this to my wife who claims only a serious amount of cosmetic surgery will ever make me attractive to an employer. I countered her insult by warning her all dogs would soon require chipping and the vets appointment for herself would be arriving toot da sweet unless she was more encouraging.

I do have the Ocean theory and each time I undertake a longish passage I ship my sextant but I never get beyond taking & reducing more than one or two sights, painfully slowly it has to be said although if Astro was the only means of working out where I was, I probably would cope.

Cheers, Brian.

Depends on how the qualification was achieved - can mean just one trip, with back-up skipper on-board.
Checking the skipper's experience is always best.
