Has anyone registered their boat through Delaware Registry (Yacht & Delaware Registry, Ltd. - http://delreg.com) and in that case what are your experiences?

We intend to cross the Pacific Ocean and want to make sure that the boat registration does not cause us any troubles.

Thank you very much in advance.

Sorry for not claryfying this from the beginning. We are not US-citizens - but due to tax-related reasons it is an advantage for us to register the boat outside of our home country

Best regards

Hi, my boat was was already on a Delaware flag - so I have kept it. The reassignment process was very easy.
To the best of my knowledge - the Delaware is very unregulated and not fussy - you should not have problem - even from new I think. I'm UK owned with the boat owned by my Croatian company - this seemed to cause no isse with them /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Good luck

If the Deleware company owns the boat and documents it with the US Coast Guard only a US citizen can skipper it. A non-US citizen can't own a CG documented boat, so it would have to be owned by the US company. You can state register the boat if Deleware is the state of principle use.
I'm sure you know your own business, but I can't think of a single benefit of going through this procedure.

Do you really want the 'Stars and Stripes' hanging off your stern in this day and age? Particularly if you're sailing outside the UK! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Isn't it akin to wearing a big target on your back? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hmm, that Delaware flag again. Whenever I've come across it, it's always been carried by somewhat shady characters. Are you sure you want the stigma?
Otherwise, looks like our paths might cross somewhere in the South Pacific next year. You won't want to get too near because I'm also a beginner and my boat is a 20 tonne hunk of concrete.

Good Luck with all your prep!

Could be that he is wanting to change his domicile to avoid IHT in which case it is sense not to have a UK registered boat. But by the same token, the boat needs to be registered to the same domicile that he is claiming - he cant not have a domicile as far as the UK taxman is concerned. All as I understand the rules which means of course that it could well be complete b**cks!
