Wood especially Teak should either be leeft bare and just kept clean or.....dare I say it Varnished I have never seen a boat that has used Deks Oil that has lasted or looked better than Clean wood or ????

Then why does it say on the can (both D1 an2) that is for marine use, internally and externally above the waterline - and suitable for all woods, including teak? I have just read the cans still in my garage.

Based on that information it is not unreasonable that I should have used it on my mast and all the brightwork on the hull and coachroof - but only once, and never again!

Sure it said to avoid using D2 externally on the tins I had. Gone with the boat now though, so no way of checking.

I can't understand it either. We must be blessed by some sort of Danish god.

I have used it for years. Totally saturate with DI then as many coats of D2 as you want. No stirring, no skinning, dries quickly, no sanding between coats, no runs, no curtains.

Just for the hell of it, and because I stripped all my teak this year (and there is a lot of it) I have tried Le Tonk. Many have negative things to say about that as well but after six coats it is looking fab.

The boat spends the winter afloat so it will be interesting to see how Le Tonk stands up to it.

I have a can of D2 in front of me right now. It says:

'D2 may be used on any type of wood above the waterline. Provides a varnish-like but flexible, gloss finish'.

And it does........ (wouldn't use anything on teak, certainly not teak oil)

However, as a curve ball, for exterior wood that requires durability and for those that don't want to go the varnishing route, what about Sadolin Extra Durable outdoor wood protection stain. Amazing stuff: available from clear to a variety of finishes. Have used at home a lot, and now on some exterior wood on boats.........

Le Tonks gives a great finish and it is "fairly" easy to "touch in" That said it isn't very forgiving and abrades easily.

Let us know how it lasts over the winter period.

In my experience it is a waste of money however little you pay for it (or similar so called saturation products). They never get into the wood to any depth and evaporate, which is why you have to keep on applying them. Bit like drug addiction!

For long lasting protection of wood whilst keeping the appearance of wood suggest you use a porous woodstain. Sikkens Novatec/top is probably the best, or International Woodskin which is a similar single pot finish. Simple and quick to apply, long lasting and easy to touch up if damaged.

Sorry, know you did not want alternatives - but anything cheaper of a similar type is likely to be even less effective!
