Hi everyone.
Does anyone out there know the maximum transom load for a Dejon 14 (mid 1980's).I want to replace my old 20Hp 2 stroke with a new four stroke.The 2 stroke weighs 49Kgs but the new 25Hp model 4 strokes weigh around 25 to 35Kgs more (the Mariner 25FS weighs 85Kgs.)The transom looks in good condition.I know the boat is rated to 25HP but what about all that extra weight?Will it sit much lower in the water? Any advice much appreciated.

Welcome aboard Phil - seems you caught the forum at a sleepy time! Wonder why??

Anyway, not sure why you want to add the extra weight and expense of a 4-Stroke. There are great bargains to be had in new 2-Strokes and they are much, much better than when your old 20HP was made. Any fuel savings you are considering will be wiped out forever with the extra cost of the 4-Stroke motor.

I don't know anything about a Dijon 14, but at 14' in length, I would assume that extra weight would upset its trim somewhat.

Do yourself, your boat and your wallet a favour - buy a modern 2-Stroke.

I fully agee with Dave on a snall semi displacement boat like yours the extra weight would be a disadvantage you certainly will not gain much in performance, or fuel economy, and the most important point is that the transom will be lowered considerably thus increasing the risk of taking one over the back in a following sea, so personnally I would stick with a modern 2 stroke at 25hp max

I hadn't really considered another 2 stroke.Contacted a few dealers and they said 4 strokes are " the way to go" but at the price they are I suppose they would do! I heard tell 2 strokes are to be banned from (new) sale in 2006? Reading the performance figures 4 strokes do seem to be more economical on fuel.Certainly much more so than my old 20 but to be fair it is over 25 years old! Pity about the extra weight and price of the 4's.I'll definately give the new 2's a look.

Hi and welcome.
Suggest you look at a Yamaha 25 4 stroke. Think it's a fair bit lighter than any other 25/4. I used one recently, for a couple of years, on a 13ft sports boat. Very very quiet and much more economical than the previous Johnson 25 2 stroke.

I have a dejon 14 and used a 15hp evenrude, the fish finder read 18mph and it planed quite well with two adults plus gear.
You would be able to trim it re the angle of the outboard to suit what you want, these hulls are of the planing type any way so it's not hard to get up to speed.
Should you go above 40hp it should be bolted through the transome and have a double purchase steering system.

It is a waste of fuel to go to big so as the others have said take this into account

Dejon 14, brings back memories.

I agree with the others. On a boat this size, weight matters and the extra 35kg would be noticed. I would get a 25hp 2 stroke. It is not correct that 2 strokes cant be manufactured after 2005

There's no problem with transom strength on the water, but beware on the trailer. This is where damage can be done, as the engine puts shock loads on the transom as the trailer goes over bumps - normally the suspension on trailers is pretty poor. If your transom is cantilevered beyond the back of the last trailer roller then beware, but if the rearmost keel roller is right under the transom (as it should) be then you will be ok
