My boat got blown over in a storm last week. Apart from the rest of the damage, most of the contents of the deisel tank have ended up in the bilge within the cabin. Having got most of it out does anyone have an infallible method to get rid of the smell? Dave

If you can soak most of it up Jizer will emulsify any remaining you then wash with water but the Jizer also has a distinct smell so you might like to try a small area first .

I found an electric bar fire (i.e. one that glows bright red) was pretty handy over the course of a few weekends aboard doing maintenance.

But then I only spilt a bowl full in the bilges.

My theory is that the diesel was burnt up a molecule at a time. Anyway, it certainly got rid of the smell. Not sure a fan heater or oil-filled radiator would work as they don't reach the same temperatures. And, of course, don't leave it unattended.

Buy the cheapest pound of ground coffee that you can find and spread that around.
Will soak up the remaining surface diesel and replace the smell at the same time.

Cats piss stink remover from a petshop. Eliminates the diesel smell completely and is odorless. Works on holding tank leaks too.

After a spill I used Virasol it was Ok at cleaning the areas around the engine, but spray engine with WD40 after otherwise you will get rust. However for the bilge I found Bilgex to be very good and that was what finally sorted the smell. so Virasol first which cleaned the diesel up and the Bilgex after for the smell.
