Just bought a Bosch PAD20001 dehumidifier and the store assistant very kindly put it in my car for me... but..... it was stored on its back, rather than upright and, when I started it, it made an unusual vibratig sound from within.

I now remember that, with fridges, if they are carried on their backs, or tilted, they need to be left for 6-12 hours upright before starting... is this the case with a dehumidifier and, if so, will running it have damaged it... or can I leave it for x hours, and try again.... or is the vibration nothing to do with this and I should take it bak.

Hope that makes sense

many Thanks

Richard

BTW... Ihave bought it in Portugal so this model doesnt appear on the Bosch UK web site... it's here:

Richard, I believe that you are supposed to leave a fridge upright for a while to let the charge and lubricating oil settle into the right place. Without the oil or refrigerant, the centrifugal pump can suffer damage. I don't know if that would result in a vibration or whether it is very likely. If it were me, I would take it straight back. You wouldn't want a noisy dehumidifier in any case!

Do you find you need one in Lagos? We don't here in Almerimar though we ran two all winter in Chichester. We have ours in storage in the UK so if we winter in Lagos (which we might do next year) I don't suppose I could get them out there. If I buy again I shall try the desiccant type.

If the store assistant kindly put it on its back, you should kindly remind him that any damage is down to him, he should kindly agree, and kindly replace it for you as the motor may well be starved of oil and the vibs are most likely worm bearings.

I had a Mitsubishi model for the last 5 years which gave up the ghost. This was quiet when new, but became noisy after a while due to some of the internal machinery knocking off the outer casing.
Replaced it with a 'Dessicant' model from B&Q which is very quiet, and extracts water very quickly even at very low (3 deg) temperatures.
Down side is that it will not run continuously - there is a 2, 4, 8 hour timer, but if none of these times is set, the unit completely shuts off after 10 hours operation.
Ideal if you are visiting the boat each day, but if left for longer, not very practical!
