Whilst we're on the subject,

dehumidifier.jpg

On Saturday afternoon, 16th June, a dehumidifier overheated and went on fire aboard a Mills 40 yacht in Dun Laoghaire Marina.
Luckily the incident was rapidly contained and fire extinguished using powder extinguishers - 5 off from emergency cabinets on piers.

Damage was mainly smoke damage to furnishings and powder contamination of sails etc.

The unit had been plugged in for approximately 75-90 minutes. Unit had automatic humidity sensor to operate only when humidity high.

This is the third recorded de-humidifier fire in Ireland in the last 6 months.

Don't get it!
I've read the post again and can't see any mention of the make and model. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Make not known but I do recall someone saying that it had been stowed and should have been left to "settle" before switching it on and running at full belt. No idea if this is true or marina myth, but was certainly said at the time.

Don't know if that could cause overheating but yes , all refridgerant units should be left to settle before switching on if they've been stored in any other position
But I presume you knew that anyway /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Okay, now Im crapping, So, how long does it take to settle?

Just like to know because for the first time this year I put one of these on the boat, and let it settle for about 1 and half/2 hours before switchin it on....

/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Still, the marina hasnt called, so the boat cant have caught fire... yet.

Unless it was a desiccant dehumidifier, but then I presume you knew that anyway /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually, I can read but I really didn't want to imply that one shouldn't go to Ireland which is a a lovely place, so I put winter in to make it sound more acceptable. I don't really come from Essex anyway, more like Wa'f'd.

Interesting I know someone else that lost their pride and joy in Ireland due to a dehumidfier going up in flames.

Actually they only suffered "smoke damage to furnishings and powder contamination of sails" as it says in the original post... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
