Hi

Anyone have any experience of this boat? Just about to buy one and there is limited online information that I can find beyond pictures. German made, 28 foot, fin keel boat of 1984 vintage.

The hull shape and stats look promising but I would be really interested in real world experiences of sailing performance and common issues.

Thanks

A fairly popular cruiser on the continent, but do not think many, if any, came to the UK. Slightly unusual internal layout. Many were used for charter work in Holland, so may be worth asking on a Dutch or German sailing web site.

If I remember correctly, was designed by Van de Stad. Moderate displacement so should be a comfortable ride.

As with any old boat it comes down to the condition and price.

Thanks, there are a few old ads from the uk and the current one I am buying so a few must have been imported. Good call on posting on a Dutch / German site, I will do that.

One thing that has confused me is that it is described on the Yachtsnet overview ( which has pictures of the actual boat I am buying) as a motor sailer. It has a 20hp engine which is pretty big for a 1980's 28 footer I guess but other than that it looks like a conventional cruiser (even a cruiser/racer) to me.

JWilson of this forum runs Yachtsnet, so I would give him a call and chat with him. He knows the boat and is very knowledgable on lots of boats. He should be able to give you answers to most of your queries.

Thanks, that is great. I will give him a call tomorrow.

I spoke to JWilson, really nice and helpful guy. He remembered almost all details of the boat he sold c.13 years ago even down the cooker layout and type of wood used internally - remarkable memory.

It was described as a motor sailer because of the engine size at 20hp but basically it is a cruiser or even club cruiser/racer - perfect for my needs.

Lol, then that must make every Centaur a motorsailer because of the 20hp engine they usually came with. Or even my Hanse, as she is not much bigger but has a 19hp lump!

Centaurs were sold new with engines ranging from (I think) 7hp Volvos to 30 hp Watermota diesels, though many had 25hp Volvos. Yes - almost every recent and current production yacht is a "motorsailer" by the engine power standards of the 1950s/60s or before. Used to own a 8 ton displacement boat with 7 hp, once sailed a heavy 45 footer with a tiny petrol-paraffin single cylinder engine of maybe 10 hp.

A Dehler Duetta 86 has just come up for sale in the Caribbean. I emailed the seller and asked for his view of the boat, especially any heavy weather experience.

Helpful young guy who owns it bought his boat in Germany and sailed it 7000 miles ending up in the Caribbean. He said that he had no problems with heavy weather but that it was difficult for him to comment because"he had never sailed on any other boat before"!!!

Massive respect to him.
