Dehler 41ds any views?

Hi I know this is a little late, we have had our Dehler 41ds since Jan 2011. Initially we had a few problems 1) The engine would stop after running 20 -30 minutes or longer. Left for 15 mins it would then fire up and run again. 2) We would motor to a berth and switch the engine off and then we would find we couldn't start it. 3) The rudder became very stiff to move as the bearings were swelling. Trying to sort this out meant that we were changing all the filters every couple of months (the advice being it must be dirty fuel! The next step was to get the fuel tank cleaned (the guy doing the cleaning said he had never seen such a clean fuel tank!). It took 2 years for us to find out (after replacing all the fuel lines and the standard filter to a Separ Fuel filter) that it was the fuel on/off valve. This has now been replaced and the problem has been solved. Trying to solve 2, found that there appeared to be a loose wire on the starter solenoid. I changed the spade connector to make a better connection. which seemed to work for a while. Ended up getting a relay fitted at a cost on the recommendation of the marine engineer who said that there wasn't enough current to fire the solenoid. Which worked for a year then the problem re occurred, now I knew what the problem was, I just replace the wire from the ignition to the solenoid problem fixed it (and removed the relay wiring). The fix for no 3 was get a marine engineering company to remove the rudder and make up new bearings and the retainer. Which also meant that the rudder needed some work so that it would not bind on the hull (expensive). We had her copper coated in 2012 which has been very effective on the hull. Last year we replaced the cockpit plywood seating with real teak, we also replaced the side windows. We are now due to a change in circumstances selling her www.dehler41ds.com with the aim of buying a smaller 10m boat.

Thanks Trashers, How does she sail? is it the same Hull/Rig?

Cueball: Sorry I am a tad late on replying to your query on how she sails. I belive she has the same rig as the DS. We took her from the yard in Portsmouth last year down to Plymouth as a shake down cruise, which apart from finding only a smidge of oil in the gearbox and a loose eletrical bolt on the bow thuster, all went well and the crew stayed on board. (Always a bonus) We then provisioned her and took her across the Bay of Biscay and round to Almerimar in Spain wher she is resting before a summers worth of Med exploring. Nothing went wrong on our Biscay trip and she felt safe and secure in a variety of sea and wind conditions.. She is a fun boat to sail, and if to show her versatility we had an afternoon in Plymouth sound following the local race guys round the cans. The self tacker took a bit of getting used to when your trying to go close to wind (she self tacks at the most in opertune moment) however we cured that by locking off the jib at the end of its travel when it was on the tack we wanted. She has a big main and its fair to say that the electric winches are a god send. Reefing is easy and the engine is reliable and very frugal and she is comfortable. All in I am very happy with her.
