I noted the following definition of a yacht from one online dictionary -

yacht (yät)
n.
Any of various relatively small sailing or motor-driven vessels, generally with smart graceful lines, used for pleasure cruises or racing.
intr.v. yacht·ed, yacht·ing, yachts
To sail, cruise, or race in a yacht.
[Probably obsolete Norwegian jagt, from Middle Low German jacht, short for jachtschip : jagen, to chase (from Old High German jagn) + schip, ship.]

Should the definition be updated to cover the more modern AWB 'lines' ?

Your thoughts :D

Nope, there is a chasm of difference between a yacht and a boat. Most marinas are full of boats with the odd yacht dotted among them.

I am the proud owner of a boat.

I've always thought that sails should be a fundamental requirement. To call a MoBo "a yacht" seems to be the ultimate affectation...

Here is another source on the definition of a yacht: -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yacht

I sail a yacht. I visit my boat. I sail a dinghy. I row a tender. My yacht is 41' long. The boat is larger than that lorry.

It depends on who I am talking to. In my opinion Marinas are full of yachts: motor yachts and sailing yachts. I would add that I dont get hung up on the definition, whatever floats your boat!

Yacht = pretentious.

Boat = sensible.

I have a boat.

Quite, I refer to my 39ft 'craft' as the 'boat' ... SWMBO often tries to correct me and say it's a yacht. I find yacht a little pretentious as you mention. She does have rather lovely sleek lines though ... perhaps a 'proper boat' ;)

pretentious |prɪˈtɛnʃəs|
adjective
attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed : a pretentious literary device.

Do you own a submarine? ;)

Yacht= What you call it when you are thinking about buying one for the first time or have just charted one for the first time.

At all other times its a boat.:)

Definition of a yacht

When you identify yourself on VHF, do you call yourself yacht then name, or mv then name for a mobo.? That's what I was taught on my VHF course not so long ago. Perhaps I should say sailboat then name or SV then name. Smacks of political correctness to me. Alan

The answer to this question can be found on channel 74
'Abercalder Bridge, this is Laggan Lock, Hi Jimmy, you are going to need to swing, I have two private yachts, a private cruiser and two Caley cruisers heading your way. (He does not need to swing for many of the hire cruisers but the inclusion of 'yachts' means he must)
What other term would be clearer?

My pocket Oxford dictionary defines the noun BOAT as:

Small open oared or sailing vessel; (usually small) steamer; boat-shaped receptacle for sauce etc.

Let's put it this way:

I go down to the boat or have work to do on the boat

I initially refer to my vessel on the VHF as Yacht Babylon, thereafter just as Babylon

I am a (leisure or amateur) sailor and belong to a yacht club

I tell non-sailors that I have a small, elderly sailing yacht

I love sailing

Luxury is having my own boat

A boater is, I believe, a hat that is no longer in fashion

Voila!

:)
