I\'d forgotten,

First night alone in a boat of any sort, a home built stick and canvas kayak. I ran it up the mud a bit, put a bit of canvas over the hole that did duty as a cockpit and slept the sleep of the just. Then the tide came in and I had rolled over as I slept.
Trust me, you do NOT want to wake up in an inverted sinking canoe at two in the morning.
Maybe they teach that in Canoe Master (coastal) courses these days.
