definition of a \"mature\"yottie

someone who acts a little odd whenever "sailing by" is played on the radio.

a rainswept night, black as the inside of cow, huddled down below waiting for the forecast, tranny batteries nearly flat, hoping for a veer but expecting it to back. Ring any bells?

Trying to find the "Null" with an RDF whilst trying to read the compass----bad enough when it wasn't raining!! Wearing black wellies and submariners white socks . All whilst sailing a converted ships lifeboat!! Ah those were the days.

Sundry things bought from Thomas Foulkes, or from Army Surplus, damp sleeping bags, the smell of mildew, towing a pram dinghy half as big as the boat everywhere, tin hurricane lamps made in China and costing a pound for anchor lights, buying rope by weight, Cerrux Red Hand antifouling (good name!) and room to anchor within rowing distance of the pub....

Yes! Yes! Wimwams!

And trying to master the mal de mer whilst trying to count the dots and dashes (always a total of 60, in theory, at least, but never in practice) from Stavanger, Bushmillls and Ploneis, somewhere between the Scillies and the Fastnet on a black and dirty night. And, on a more personal note, reaching out of my bunk to shove my finger down the hole in the sole to find out if it's time to get up and pump again.

And a needle to clean the - er - senior moment - little holes the petrol came out of in the - er - bit that you could take off where the petrol got turned into little squirts. And an airing cupboard shelf for the magneto in winter.

All of the above plus a conviction that there nothing odd about a sowester hat in combination with a longshorman smock and carpet slippers., or in ending up in Ostend when the "plan" was for Lowestoft, or that rule five is all very well but when sailing solo it's ok to do the best you can,,,,,,,,,,
