Yet the old "aircraft carrier" coke bottle Cortinas are collectable! I know what you mean tho' when I "upgraded" from a mk2 to a mk3 I was quite dissapointed. It was faster but wallowed dreadfully.
Some people will collect anything! Don't mean that what they collect is a classic.................
Generally, just means that somebody else in their family, has the one working brain cell! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Personally, I think the term "Classic", has been grossly degraded in recent times, most people these days wouldn't know a classic from their back sides!
As we are really talking about boats, here is what I consider a classic. It would be built or designed pre WW2, and built in wood.
There are more recent vessels built along classic lines, some in wood and some in other materials, the Folk Boat would seem to me to be a good example, they to me are not classics, but they along with many others are very nice boats just the same.
I know there are people that consider cars etc. over 25 years old as classics, but I just think that is to make people that own old bangers feel better! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Still, all the above is just my opinion, (I don't do humble ones)................
Beauty is definately in the eye of the beholder, but it doesn't mean that what the belolder considers to be a classic is one. Your point about the blokes building the pre war boat thinking that a Victorian vessel would be a classic is not really relevant.
We are talking about what should be deemed a classic today. as I said previously, there are a lot of VERY nice boats around, some built on classic lines, but I don't think they can be truly called a classic, without the age parameter that I previously described.
It may be true to say that boats can be all things to all men, but to me, a classic boat is one that is as I already said, Built or designed pre WW2 and built in wood.
As I also already said, all this is just my not very humble opinion.............
I have been having a bit of a sly look at one that I believe is still for sale, it's a Maurice Griffiths design, and the asking price is very reasonable, but being a wood butcher by trade, I do find the medium a bit alien. I understand how strong they are etc. At least if built by somebody who knows what they are doing, but I also know that they are quite difficult to sell on. I aint worried about the Insurance Companies having a wobble, as I feel that it's up to me to make sure that I never need to use them.
I quite like the idea of some bugger shouting "Starboard" at me, and just being able to smile, and call back "Yeah Right". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
