We just bought a very downsized car today which was part of the plan of moving down here and getting the boat. After years of expensive motoring, I'm amazed at how much better it can be. It's a 1.4 turbo diesel, group 4 insurance ( instead of group 17) and more to the point, taxing it only costs £85/year, which is half the cost for the old "previous lifestyle" car- I didn't know the difference was that great. Best insurance quote was £128/year. I'm really chuffed because we've saved about £400 a year before we even start driving it at 60mpg.

Just had to share that really. Now, what can I spend £400 on for the boat?

all very well and good but does it go vroooooom when you press the loud pedal?

Hi, move to Australia, we run a three year old Toyota 100 series Land Cruiser 4.2 litre petrol and my work ute is a Nissan Navara 1 Tonner 3.2 litre diesel. The Landie cost about 300quid a year fully comp on the road, but fuel is badit has an extended range fule tank fitted so takes 120 litres to fill it at about $120 (40 quid roughly) but we live in te bush so justify the cruiser! The Nissan takes 80 litres of diesel at $80 a fill and costs about 200 pounds a year full comp on the road.

Boat registration 50 pounds a year and a swing mooring the same.

Why do you think I moved to Australia!

Please do not think I am not rubbing your noses in it, I spent 43 years in uk paying taxes etc. I just want you to know what it is like down under!

regards Nick

so what's this 'boat registration'?

we get our ears bent about moving to oz when we visit the sprogs. trying to convince swmbo to sail out there but need to know more about the implications of importing the boat.

biggest problem with importing a boat to aus when emigrating is that they still grab you for tax on the boat:

The personal and household effects concession does not include yachts except
for yachts that are designed to be sailed in sheltered waters -
That do not exceed 1000 KG unladen weight
Do not incorporate any device for propelling the boat by power eg a motor
Are not of the deep keel type.

Your yacht will attract duty of 5% and GST of 10%.

The duty applies to the Customs Value - (I will pm you the method of working out the custom s value)

The GST is calculated on the Customs Value, the duty payable and the
overseas freight and insurance costs/essential sailing costs.

I will not write here what I think of this cause it would cause my post to be kimmerised.

The new car only has to do up to 40mph to work and back, so it doesn't need to go vroom and overtaking is for dreamers round here.

Sold the Jag last week, and saw a Metro for 50 quid with 3 months MOT and 2 months tax. It rattles a bit, doesn't smoke, stops in a straight line, it all works, and will last at least another year. Total Bargain. Except can I be seen in a Metro for a year?

Hm: Suspended Jag insurance policy, and then took out insurance on Metro. Added 18 year old daughter, provisional, and they robbed me of an extra 29p for the year!

I know what you mean!

I worked in Oz about 8 years ago - Company car was 4.2 litre Toyota Lexen.

And the ratio of boats in the Perth area was one boat for every three houses. I never had oilies on there, just T-shirt & shorts !

Very sorry when that job came to an end! !

Siblings costing you money to drive your car?
Har! Wait 'til you're older, I can now borrow my sons Yam or Ferrari!

Mind you, sigh, now I think of it, I am still supplying my daughter with
a car, ("Think of your grandchildren daddy")
