These pages have enlightened me in the past about the niceties of blue ensigns and their defacing....

Last week, though, I spotted one vessel sporting a red duster with something which looked like a strange symbol added to its bottom right-hand corner: do defaced Red Ensigns exist? If not what could it have meant?

It is not really important, just curious.

Yes they do. I give you Guernsey as one example...

There's an Essex club too with a Red Ensign defaced with three white stilettoes...no, I mean scimitars. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are a few Clubs who proudly fly the defaced red

Correct, three 'Seax' to be historically accurate on the West Mersea defaced red. The Seax was a short one-handed sword from which the Saxons got their name.

That could get you caught out on the radio "there's free seax at W.Mersea club".

Re: Defaced Union Flag?

Gosport Ferry - this has a Union Flag, similar to a 'Pilot Jack', but with the White edge opposite the staff only.

A Pilot Jack has a white border all the way around, so why is the Ferry ensign different??

Why are they flying it?
