Lack of time/funds and a slightly asthmatic engine mean we may very well stick to cruising local waters over the next 5-6 days.
As sort of Farewell Tour of the East Coast.

So, where to go?
As some of you may know, we sail a boat not ideally suited for East Coast cruising (drawing 7' as we do).
We have a pile of dust masquerading as anchor chain forward - so anchoring is out.
And we would like to avoid marinas.

Where could I find free/cheap moorings capable of taking 44' - 13ton boat? And where we would be staying afloat at all states of tide (we do NOT take to the ground).
No need for a water taxi - will be bringing own tender.

We plan to revisit Ramsholt. Never been up the Ore though - would that suit us (bearing in mind that springs is coming up)

Any pointers gratefully received.

£5 a night for a mooring at Ramsholt - call George Collins, 07930 304061, when you arrive and he will allocate you a mooring based on your boat size.

£10 a night at Orford - there are 2 or 3 visitors moorings, call 01394 459950 or 07528 092635.

£5 a night a Aldeburgh - there are 4 visitors moorings on the E. side near the Martello tower - as you approach from the South they are the first 4 buoys you come to on that side, 2 orange, 1 yellow, 1 white in that order. If you stay the night then someone will come out in a launch the next morning to collect your fiver (in my experience at around 8:30).

Suffolk Yacht Harbour (Levington) will rent you a mooring for a night too.

I'm sure you can pick up a mooring at Pin Mill, Levington, Felixstowe Ferry etc. but I've no experience of doing so.

In addition.....
On the Colne - Pyefleet Creek opposite Brightlingsea (not that many visitor moorings though, OK midweek I expect); on the Blackwater - West Mersea; Marconi YC; on the Crouch - Burnham on Crouch; North Fambridge; on the Roach - Paglesham moorings are I think still unusable following change of ownership.
Across the estuary.... Harty Ferry at the east end of the Swale; Queenborough at the west end of the Swale; Hoo Ness YC and Medway YC on the Medway.
Also Felixstowe Ferry on the Deben - call up the HM.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

In addition to Ramsholt, I'll have a look at Aldeburgh, Marconi and West Mersea. :encouragement:

Memories of the Crouch are not happy ones - will give it a miss.
Had thought of revisiting the Medway, but the wind forecast for the next few days (mainly Southerly) and the spring tide means that we could be faced with hours of motoring in the wind - something I wish to avoid.

Wim, we have been at Levington for several years but only this summer spent the night on a mooring at Wrabness.....not far but very pleasant all the same!!

West Mersea. Moorings capable of taking your size boat are in the Quarters. £15 a night. .

No offence but I pay £13 a night visitors rate in Tollesbury marina round the corner. Boat is 34 feet and 12 tonnes. Marina comes with leccy, swimming pool & no need for taxi.

Marconi - visitors mooring is easily up to taking Guapa. If that's in use pick one on the outer row where the bigger boats are. Camping fortnight at the moment I think so bar should be open every day...

Slight fred drift, but for anyone thinking of heading off to warmer climes, and even to extend the available mooring areas (if only to Hamford water), replacing that dust might be an idea ;) Either way, still jealous.

I assume you are a beth holder at a transeurope group marina - The visitor rate you quote is a 50% discount on the full rate. It's a very good deal with half a dozen member marinas on the East Coast.

Agreed, but in The Netherlands we found tie 1/2 price deal was almost the full price elsewhere,as these marina`s were higher priced in the first place. Monnikendam was the best 1/2 price deal. Others hardly worth the bother

Back home now. Thanks for all the suggestions/replies.
Filed away for future reference. Maybe as early as September.

In the end we didn't go anywhere - spent every night on our mooring at SYH.
Saturday: kite flying on the Orwell
Sunday: Wrabness for dinner and back. The plan had been to head for Ramsholt on Sunday, but someone who shall remain nameless ( :o ) slept in (14 hours) and we missed the tidal window.
Monday: Sealand and back
Tuesday: Medusa and back

Went nowhere and still covered 58NM in 4 days.

And now: back to stuffing boxes - moving house next week :(
