Hi

I need to nip up my keel bolts. The nuts are 38mm 1 1/2" but the studs protrude a lot. I therefore need a socket with a 100mm 4 inch reach.

Apart from chopping and welding is there anywhere I can source one. I have not been very lucky with Mr Google as yet.

Regards

Jim

Are you sure you need to do anything? If your boat is a Hunter Legend 460 as shown in your profile it's a relatively recent production GRP boat and the keel attachments are not designed to need anything done to them unless there has been a known problem, ie severe grounding. And in that case it might be remove keel completely (remarkably difficult, can even cause hull GRP damage) rather than just try to tighten nuts.

Hi

First thanks for all your replies - very helpful as usual

Yes you are correct the boat is a Legend 460.

As with everything I have found with boats for each issue there are many different opinions. As part of the survey it was recommended that the keel bolts were checked for tightness. The yard has loaned me the socket set extension bars etc. but some of the studs are too long for their deep socket.

Before I wend down the fabrication route I thought I would look for a relatively simple one i.e. the long reach socket.

I don't think it can hurt to check their tightness. I need to clean them up anyhow but that's another story. One problem is that the Hunter recommended torque is 325 ft lbs hard to achieve in a small space without a hernia!!

Jim

...or here, cheaper option:

(Searching for long reach more productive than deep ;) )

Thanks

I did find the Draper ones but unfortunately the are not 100mm deep inside and therefore will not reach the nut over the stud. I have already been loaned three similar sockets which fit over a couple of the studs. The problem is the need to be 100mm deep inside to fit the remaining 6.

I've not seen regular sockets with that internal depth. The Go-Thru sockets suggested by PCUK could be a better bet, although access to the ratchet lever may be tricky. Otherwise, you'll have to get something welded up.

Or pop into your local classic Mini specialist and hire/borrow a balljoint/flywheel socket. I have one in the garage you could have borrowed if you had been closer.

I have seen a boat with a broken keel flange due to over-tightening to what must have been a slightly uneven hull moulding.
If it was my boat, I wouldn't fix it until it was broken - ie. showing signs of needing attention.

You might be able to use a crowfoot if it would fit in, torque could be applied in small space using an air torque gun.

I'd be inclined to question the surveyor as to how he's proposing to check the keel-bolt tightness. You might find that he knows how it's done - on the other hand you might find it's a standard line in his boiler-plated report software and he'll remove your apprehensions at the stroke of a keyboard!!!
As already pointed out I'd doubt it's really necessary.
