Not sure whether this has been covered but I certainly think I forgot to mention that a friend of mine with a "deemed VAT paid" boat went through the process of working out how to prove that VAT status. After a little calling around it turned out that a quick call to HMRC they sent him an official certificate of status to carry on board. No charge and no bother, they didn't even ask for evidence of the status of the vessel, just an explanation of why it should be deemed paid.

Thought that might be useful to anyone with an older boat and certainly worth a phone call as it means paperwork is complete for selling or sailing abroad.

Just the main number apparently and tell them you need proof of VAT status. To be fair HMRC are generally extremely helpful if you don't call during tax return season so give them a bell some time before December and you'll probably get a good response.

At the risk of thread drift, does anyone know exactly how it works when you import a non VAT paid as a personal asset of someone moving to take up residence in the U.K. (and complying with the requirements for periods of ownership before and after the move) and therefore qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief.

my boat was built in the U.K. and exported VAT free under teh sail away scheme to Jersey in 2002 where it has been ever since, owned by a Jersey resident, from whom I bought the boat 7 years ago (and I am a jersey resident)

I may be moving back to the U.K. next year, and I know I can bring the boat in as a personal asset and not pay VAT. I have been trying to work out what the implications are when I travel to the EU and try and sell the boat in the future

i was sort of hoping I could get a VAT deemed paid confirmation from HMRC once I had been back in the U.K. 12 months …if I did would I be able to sell the boat as VAT paid

its certainly the case if yiu bring a car back in the scheme but VAT tends not to raise its head in teh second hand car market quite the same way that boats do…but as far as I can see the VAT rule do not distinguish between cars and boats in the transfer of residence provisions

the scenario described in this thread could solve this for me …anyone have any knowledge or experience of bringing a boat in under transfer of residence relief ?

Can you possibly clarify exactly what form of “official certificate” that HMRC supplied?
I ask because I am slightly surprised that HMRC were willing to issue something, as they keep no records of VAT status of yachts - and certainly no records of when a yacht was built and whereabouts on key VAT dates.

Some of us obtained EU T2L documents from HMRC prior to end of Brexit Transition, but these required evidence of VAT payment and I believe are largely worthless now UK is no longer part of EU.

I wonder if what he got was TL2

He just described it as a certificate stating the vessel name and that VAT was deemed paid. From what he said he'd just explained the boat was built in the 1980s and it's history and value and they decided that was sufficient so sent out the paperwork.

@Bathdave you may be best just asking HMRC that one, I'd have thought VAT would be due on import but I know very little about immigration.

I may be totally wrong here but I think you would have to pay VAT for the boat to have been VAT deemed at time of original sale.

Non-VAT paid boats are exactly that.

I'm sure that I didn't even need to prove VAT status in order to get a TL2 last year! I think I had to provide a copy of the Bill of Sale or registration (can't remember which), but that's all IIRC.
