Fantastic to lounge in the North Wales sunshine afloat at Port Dinorwic but I couldn't avert my attention from the condition of my upholstery. The situation has not been helped by a design flaw which has caused the aftmost back rest to tear as a result of lifting the seat base to gain access to the engine bay. So it would appear time to dip my finger into the savings account again for re-upholstering the deck seating. I am assuming this will have to done in-situ on the boat. I can not work out how the backrest is secured ... Are they just glued on? If anybody has any advice or useful upholsterers in the area it would be appreciated. I have been given one contact but I think they would require me to take the seating to them.

If its the discussion we had about upholstery you would have to take the cushions etc to them. Not far from you though in West Houghton, Bolton. Have a look at their website. www.caravanupholstery.co.uk.

Locally, I think 'boatshed' do upholstery as well as covers but I believe expensive. Not got a number or link but I've seen their van around PD.

Try the sealine owners club for info on removing backrest.

The two individual backrests for the helm seat are held on with velcro so they just pull off. I know this as one of them came away on my S23 and the backing that secured the velco has to be glued back on.
Having seen pictures of other Sealines with work in progress I believe the backrests to the cockpit seats are probably secured by silicone sealant and possibly adhesive.

I am sure the uphostery work has to be done in a workshop rather than on the boat.

By the way I haven't had the same issue of damage to the seat back.

Martin, its the aft starboard (I really home that is the same as back right!) corner. With the seat cushion removed, the base when lifted rubs up against the upholstery of the backrest and has caused it to tear. Obviously each time I lift the hatch to the engine compartment I am aggravating the damage .... the boat is however 10 years old.

I understand from your description where the damage is . But I havent experienced that.
I lift the engine hatch until it meets the seat base than ease the seat base up while at the same time raising the engine hatch lid . That way there is only a little contact between the seat base and the fixed backrest cushion .
Perhaps your seat padding is a little fatter than mine. Or perhaps the stay for the engine bay lid is positioned a little differently meaning your engine hatch (and seat base) have to be raised higher then mine in order for the engine hatch stay pin to be engaged.
No two boats seem to be identical.
 
We have just had all of our cockpit vinyl replaced on our S24 by Quayside and Leisure. Cannot recommend them highly enough - the quality of finish and fit is fantastic and price is very reasonable. I have some pics that I could post up mid fit if I could get them off my phone!

Loui who runs the company and does the fitting/design did work for Sealine so nice to keep it relatively close to OEM.

I have no connection - just a happy customer!

Could I be really cheeky and ask how much just to give me an idea. Also how we're the back rests removed / replaced ... Just glued on?

I had the whole of the cockpit stripped (seats, helm, side cards etc), all seat bases replaced and all refitted for approx £1100. This included travel and strip/fit and VAT.

I'm not sure how the S23 back rests are secured but on ours they were bolted from behind. Its possible its just glue and silicone holding it together.

Quayside and Leisure also did our cabin too and I stripped that right down and took it to their factory (to save money and also because I was going close to them anyway) and all of the cabin was screwed and glued - I would guess that no boat is exactly the same!

I'll try and get some pics loaded later tonight

As you can see in the picture below (if I have added it correctly) the seat base on my S23 doesn't need to be raised so high as to foul on the seat backrest. The seat base only needs to be raised a little higher than shown in the picture to allow the engine hatch to be raised and locked into place.
