whats your recommendation dubarry...expensive,quayside look like dubarry much cheaper....,musto, etc, etc, etc.I liked the ecco ones at 120e but only lasted about 2 months whats your preference???

Bought some Quayside at the Southampton Boat Show is 2005. They both split after a couple of months. Sent them back and they replaced them with the latest style and they've been great ever since. They are the same style as reviewed in an earlier MBM magazine in '06.

My usual fare is whichever deck shoes are on special offer. However, Santa must have got my letter this year because a rather nice pair of Dubarry boots arrived. Probably won't wear them instead of deck shoes in the summer but they were just the job when I took the boat out last week.

The best I've had are the French Thalassa brand which I buy from the chandlery over the bridge in Treguier. They have leather uppers, are very reasonably priced [56 Euros], water resistant, fastened with a Velcro strap instead of laces and are very comfortable to walk in.

I use the dubarry's on a very regular basis and find them very comfortable and hard wearing, you get what you pay for with dubarry's.

I'll second Talbot's recommendation. You can buy about 5 pairs of M&S deckies for the same rip off price as charged for one pair of so-called name brand deckies. I bet they're all made in the same Chinese factory anyway

I'll third it.

I have posh ones but always find myself wearing the M&S ones, comfortable and durable.

I like comfort and years ago ditched the leather type deck shoes for trainer style ones for use on a sailboat. Douglas Gill and Harken are common over here but I prefer to buy Sperry Topsiders via West Marine in the USA since at $79 (I think) they are under half the UK price for them and they come in wide width sizes as well. The Sperry ones have far superior non-slip to any of the leather ones I've used over the years ( I still have a pair of poser Sebagos to wear if needs be) are light cool, very comfortable and very quick drying if they get wet. The soles are a softish rubber, I guess for extra traction so I keep mine for on board only use to preserve them, only relegating them to round town walkers after I switch to new ones on board and I find they last about 3 seasons like that. I have also used the Douglas Gill ones and have some Harkens bought for £10 at SIBS which I use for walking ashore, their non-slip isn't as good as the Sperrys on board.

As for the marine prices and where they are made, I have a super comfy pair of nubuck leather deck shoes bought in Walmart in the USA for $19, not on sale, which I wear day in day out. They look identical to a number of £60-£70 designer deck shoes around the chandlers, but they can't be really can they?

Henri Lloyd Prism 3 eye for me.

Do all the things a good deckie should !

Bought at SIBS 2005 still looking very good, no need to get another pair just yet !

I bought a pair of THESE as a spare pair of deck shoes but they have turned out to be the most comfortable and also have the best grip of any others I have had.
My current other pair are Timberland which are ok.
