The trawler has a fair amount of leaks on or around the gunnels .
I believe it's more to do with the joint's than poor planks . At the moment I'm thinking hot pitch then recover the whole deck in canvas ( 8 or 10 weight )
The job will have to wait for spring but at least I can be ready to do it .

Is the pitch then canvas a reasonable proposition or should I go over the deck and recaulk then cover with canvas ,I know some say put the canvas down dry and others lay it on paint .
Cheers
Mick

Anything bituminous, such as pitch, will bleed through canvas and you will never stop it. Any paint which you put on top of the canvas will have dark brown irregular strips all along it or all over it. The accepted method is to bed the canvas in thick paint. Boatyards would use up all their left-over paint for this job, as it didn't matter what the colour was. Once firmly fixed in place, the canvas is then painted with a proprietary deck paint, which also contains a little very fine sand.
Peter.

Cascover works, i think it's canvas on some sort of glue.

Not heard of that one , I've used Trackmark in the past but even with best Dunlope glue it did not stay down to long , mind you that was laid on steel so wood should be better.

Mick,
Cascover is a nylon scrim canvas laid down with cascamite glue, a forerunner of glass and epoxy sheathing and would not be suitable for your deck, as it would not be flexible enough. Do you really want to canvas your decks, or just hot pitch or "Jeffreys marine glue" it at the seams and leave it. If you just seal it with pitch/glue, you can always redo it when needed, if you canvas it and it still leaks, you are stuffed, I would be tempted to seal it with caulking/pitch/glue (if thats what it originally had) and see how it goes, before using canvas/paint. You will need to fill the cracks and seams with something, (sikaflex) before putting canvas down anyway, paint wont seal it.

Yes it is a bit of a dilema , it had canvas down which is well rotted and also tar is evident, hence my thinking tar it all then as I've seen on other boats sprincle grit into the tar before it sets .
I agree the paint wont do much and will just split as time goes on.
The deck is water logged so I cant do any thing untill spring.
Cheers

Hey that would be cool, I think I'l put a tart over the bows to start the drying process
cos then I can get started asap.
I have seen a few decks covered in fibreglass yes not trad but effective none the less.
Thing is what ever I do it must be able to be undone or improved on in future years.
I'l pm you mate
cheers
Mick

In olden days men were happy with a simple wooden figurehead. Now you want a real live lady of the night on your boat, Mick.
